Cheap and Easy,Sweet and Smoky

No the title of this post does not refer to me after a few drinks!

I had been craving a nice hearty soup lately. Maybe it is the biting cold or the whipping winds. Maybe I have just missed using my pretty lime green dutch oven. Whatever the reason I finally made some last night and fell in love with it. SO GOOD. The addition of molasses really gives it this subtle sweet flavor that pairs beautifully with the smoky beans and cumin, not to mention the delicious turkey bacon. What's more, it's incredibly cheap to make. All of the ingredients come in at just about $10 and it will feed one person for a week, two people for a couple of days.

Even though it's an easy recipe, it is not a super quick recipe - you will need about 3 hours, not including at least 6 hours to soak the beans. But it's well worth the time! If you have been in a black bean state of mind lately, I encourage you to give this recipe a whirl.

Cheap and Easy , Sweet and Smoky Black Bean Soup
adapted from this recipe
Serves 6

1 lb dried black beans, rinsed and soaked for 6 hrs or overnight
5 cups water
1/8 tsp baking soda
1/3 tsp salt
2 tbsp olive oil
1 yellow onion, chopped finely
1 large sweet potato, chopped into ½ inch chunks
1 carrot, chopped finely
1 green pepper, chopped
1 tbsp cumin
1 tsp chili
1 tbsp molasses
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups chicken broth/stock
1 lime
8 slices of cooked turkey bacon, crisp and crumbled

Drain the soaked beans and put into a large pot with water and baking soda and salt. Bring to a boil and then simmer for about 90 minutes or until beans are tender.

In another large pot, cook onion and potato in olive oil over medium heat for about fifteen minutes/until lightly browned.

Then add garlic and cumin and chili and cook for 2-3 more minutes.

(Big ups to the international food aisle where I scored this large jar of minced garlic for $2!)

Add beans with liquid, broth, molasses, pepper and bacon to the large pot. Stir and bring to a boil.

Simmer for 20-30 minutes.

While this is happening, I cooked my turkey bacon:

8 minutes at 375 degrees in the oven makes them perfectly crisp and easy to crumble!

Mmmmm.

Anyway, once your soup has simmered, remove 4 cups of soup and place in a blender.

Puree and return carefully to the soup. Stir and add lime juice, salt and pepper to taste.

You can serve it as is. I prefer a thicker black bean soup so I simmered it for about 15 more minutes uncovered.

And then served with a dollop of fat free sour cream.

It’s such a delicious sweet but smoky soup. And so easy!

*You could easily make this vegetarian by using Veggie Broth and omitting the bacon. But why would you want NOT to use bacon (even if it IS turkey bacon).

Don't forget to enter the Crane Notecard giveway below! I'm drawing the winner TOMORROW, Friday January 30th!

LOVE Letters (and a Contest!)

Seriously. I love letters!

One of my personal ongoing "resolutions" is to engage in more written correspondence. I mean email is grand but what's better than a hand written note? Especially with all the fabulous note cards and stationary and letter-writing accouterments out there.

(The Crane website = my porn. But that's neither here or there.)

If you are into the written word, like myself, AND into free things, also like myself. you must check out this contest. One of my new favorite blogs, A Touch of Whimsy, is hosting a fabulous giveaway for a PSA Personalized Stamper!

Perfect for leaving your mark on envelopes or letters, I love the sense of nostalgia associated with leaving one's stamp on your correspondence.

Look how cute they are! My favorite is the Brooke Stamp because it's modern but still classic. There are scads more designs on the website - check it out!

All you have to go to win one is go to A Touch of Whimsy and leave a comment on this post, stating which stamp is your favorite. Winners will be picked on February 4th. Couldn't be easier!

And you know what? To inspire the inner note-dropper in you I am going to add to the giveaway fun. If you leave a comment on this post you will be in the running for this adorable note card set from Crane & Co.

There are 10 notes and 10 lined envelopes in the pack. Makes it easy to brighten someone's day with a handwritten note, oui? Love the vibrant pink and the adorable palm trees.

I will close comments on Thursday, January 29th and randomly pick the lucky recipient of these notecards on Friday, January 30th! (Sorry, US residents only!)
Good luck!

Call Me The Veep of Creep

I'm glad I have a boyfriend.

Before you run away and barf, please note that I'm not being all sappy and corny about it, don't worry. What I mean is I am so happy I have a boyfriend because I have become a fucking creep and it's best that I am off the market for the good of mankind.
Honestly I think having a boyfriend for the past five years it was MADE me a creep. I feel like I can say what I want with no repercussions. When I was single I at least checked myself a little bit. But now? I freely basically and usually inadvertantly hit on guys because I know they know I am not serious because everyone knows I am with and love Adam so who cares? And Adam knows I'm not serious so.....? But I am also pretty sure I have always been kind of a creep. And also I have absolutely no game. Even a girl in a relationship should still try and have some kind of game, so pity for that. All of which is to say that I'm pretty sure if I were a dude, I would be a dirty old man.

This story is nothing without examples.
Last week a coworker turned to me and was all "Are you going to go nuts decorating this place for Valentine's Day?"
"Of course" I replied
"Well can you make me a sign that says "Single Dude, In Need of a Valentine" to hang outside my office?"
"How about I make you a sign that says "The Champagne Room"
"..........." he said.
"You know", I continued, "like at a strip club?"
"Oh....ok" he said.

CREEP!!!! I have no idea why I even said that. I turned away and repeated a mantra I have become all to familiar with "In 5 minutes, I won't feel like a tool. In five minutes, I won't feel like a tool" and sure enough within 5 minutes I was like "Whatever that was totally funny".

And then there was the time when I came up to my friend Henry and was all "Hey did you see the new guy? Tres cute" and Henry turned around only it wasn't Henry at all, it was the cute new guy who looks just like Henry from behind. CREEP!

And then there is this past weekend where I kept telling my new friend Kenny that I was going to put roofies in his drink. REPEATEDLY. ALL NIGHT LONG. One inference to date rape is OK....ten or twelve over the course of a night is just bad taste. CREEP.

And there is also the fact that I much prefer the show starring this guy:

Over the show starring this guy:

I won't even mention that there is a bartender at a local bar whom
Jenny and I call blatantly to his face "Hot Arms".

Even though the song is technically not about "A creep" and more about "creeping" I will still end on that note because hey, its a good song.

I'm a Hyper Hypo

So, I am a total hypo. A somewhat closted one, but a hypo nonetheless.

And watching several episodes of House over the past few weeks has not helped matters. A slight headache is a brain bleed. A twinge in my arm is sacroidosis (not even sure what that is but it's mentioned in every episode). And so on and so forth.

These aren't things I say out loud but little manias I keep to myself throughout the day .

In any case, yesterday I was sitting on the bed, about to paint my toenails when I noticed a LARGE bruise on my calf. Like about the size of a fist? And I have no idea how I got it. I don't bruise easily AT ALL (In fact when my car's trunk closed on my arm last month that was the first time I can remember having a bruise in a long time). I was always pissed that I didn't bruise easily because when my brother and I engaged i fistifuffs as kids I yearned for a HUGE bruise to really get him into trouble with. But it never happened. Damn.

So anyway, yeah. Monstrous, mysterious bruise. It was really freaking me out because hello "Bruises easily" is a sympton of a million things and if I have a huge bruise but no recollection of an injury that isn't that "bruising easily"? I needed a test to see if this was in fact what was going on. I needed some kind of mild trauma to see if a bruise would appear so I could then proceed to freak out.

"Punch me in the arm", I said to Adam.
"What?" he said
"Punch me hard in the arm, let's see if I bruise".
"No way", he replied.

WTF? What's the point of having a boyfriend if they won't wail on you when you ask?

SO I took matters into my own hands, literally and punched myself in my thigh as hard as I could (which, admittedly is not all that hard). That was last night and as of today? No bruise. Phew.

And I realized this morning that bruise is on my leg at the same area that our glass coffee table hits my leg and I have walked right into the sharp corners on that piece more time than I care to remember so I guess that explains that!

The Fashionista's Guide to Frugality

Last week I posted the Foodie's Guide to Frugality and it was fun compiling info about saving $ while still eating out and eating well, that I decided to do a Fashionista's Guide to Frugality for shopping mavens who have found the tight economy has also tightened their clothes/accessories/shoes budget.

The Fashionista's Guide to Frugality

As you can surmise from this recent post - I am a huge TJ Maxx/Marshalls fan. High end designer names at low end prices? Yes Please!! If you read the comments section you can see the kinds of deals people have scored there and you can too! I have to say though, being lucky at TJ Maxx and Marshalls requires some thought. It's not always an easy score. I find that two methods work best.

1) Shop often. Not necessarily BUY often, but definitely try and hit up your local TJs/Marshalls at least once a week if you can. Their stock changes on a dime and it really is, like they say in those not at all annoying commercials, never the same place twice
2) Shop the clearance rack. Even if you fancy yourself "not a clearance shopper", there are crazy deals to be had so throw yourself upon the clearance rack and pay attention as you rifle through. Nicole Miller dress for $9? Ralph Lauren sweater for $20? These are not myths!

I also have to give a shout out to the Talbots Outlet (locals, there is one in Hingham).

I know people think Talbots is stuffy but these people are ill informed. Talbots is FABULOUS and the outlet even more so. It's not just for ladies in Mom Jeans and Navy Blue Blazers with Gold Buttons (not that there's anything wrong with that!), they have really turned it around. Tons of gorgeous classics for rock bottom prices. I'm talking $128 Italian leather pumps for $14. Gray gabardine wide legged pants marked down from $148 to $19. Yeesh! Half of the handbags I sold during the Pink Shoe Purse Sale were from there and I got great deals on each. If you are in the area I highly recommend grabbing some girlfriends and making a Saturday morning of it.

Next up - when it comes to bigger ticket items, say a new pair of Tory Burch flats or a fabulous Kate Spade bag....just because your wallet is small doesn't mean you can't dream big! Just do it in increments. Me, I am not that great at saving. It's something I'm working on but I get a little headway and then find something else I could spend the money on. So if I really am intent on something I can't quite afford at the moment? I buy myself a gift card. Can't swing the $200 Revas? Maybe buy yourself a $25 or $50 Saks or Nordstrom (which they sell at Stop and Shop!) gift card and sock it away. Even better, if you order a gift card online most retailers will ship it to you for FREE. A few of those over a month or two won't seem like a huge investment but in a month or two you will have your fab purchase without feeling a hit to your wallet because you spread the spoil out over a small amount of time.

Next up? Email lists. I know we get enough emails as it is without putting ourselves on lists to get even MORE email. But this is how you'll get the inside track on sales, coupons, events. I have a seperate email address I use expressly for signing up for email lists. That way my regular email isn't inundated but when I have some shopping to do I log into my other email address and peruse the sales. Are you a fan of outlet shopping (who isn't). Many outlet malls have coupon books and offers that are FREE for people who belong to their email lists. Chelsea Premium Outlets, who own outlets all over the country (including Wrentham, for locals) has a VIP Lounge that is free to join and whose members get email coupons, vouchers to redeem for coupon books, invites to private sales and more! All for giving them an email address!

Now, there are scads of ways to save money buy shopping online but to be honest I am an online shopping neophyte compared to my girl Lys, fellow shopaholic on a budget who knows how to get the most bang for her e-buck. I asked her to shower her wisdom on us and luckily she agreed! Here is her excellent advice on saving money shopping online:

I have to confess, my expertise with all things cash back and online shopping has been an expensive journey. See, I was one of those gals who would just click and *bam* it's on its way. It wasn't until I started learning about coupon codes that I came onto some sites that made me realize that I was doing this online shopping thing all wrong. So, in the hope that I can spare just ONE shopping diva the horrific experience of spending too much - here's some tips and tricks with how to get the most bang for your (online) buck.
The main sites to bookmark are:
For the cash back sites like FatWallet, Mr. Rebates and EBates, you need to sign up. In these economic times, every little bit helps so here's how it goes.
Let's say you want to get something fabulous from, perhaps, Victoria's Secret. Start off and head over to EVReward to find out who gives the highest percentage of cash back for that retailer. Make a note of it. Also, sometimes EVReward has coupon codes. Again, make note of the good ones Then head over to RetailMeNot to find some great coupon codes. Again, write down the best code for either free shipping, percentage off, etc. Maximize my friends. MAXIMIZE. Then, go to the highest cash back site that you made note of, click through the link ON their site for Victoria's Secret and shop away. When you check out, make sure to use those coupon codes that you had made a note of. In a few days, you should get an email from your online cash back retailer going "You have XYZ Pending".

Disclaimer: NORMALLY it takes 2-3 days for the retailer to report it back to the cash back site. So patience will be your saving grace. Also, it takes about 90 days to pay out so remember that as well. Just think of it as "Found Money" and more often than not, they require Paypal. Look at it as found money. I use my cash back sites for everything from clothes, shoes, makeup to cooking supplies to even travel. It's well worth the effort.
Plus - not dealing with crazy peeps at a mall - PRICELESS!

Thanks Lys!! The only site I had heard of before was retailmenot but after checking these out I am excited to save save save next time the online shopping bug bites!

Websites like Ruelala.com and GiltGroupe.com (whose end of season sale is the TALK of the town) offer high end private designer sales online that you get an email about the day before and must sign in to view/shop. For instance Rue La La is having a DIOR sale Friday starting at 11AM with a James Jeans and Kay Unger sale to follow over the weekend. I'm sure I won't buy anything but it sure is fun to look. And since prices can be as much as 80% off retail....it makes Christian a little more attainable than say, eluxury.com. If you would like a membership to either site drop me an email and I will send you an invitation!

Not that you need a high end label to look chic....just browse the higher end sites for inspiration but make the look yours by finding similar styles at places like Target. I am a big fan of the blog The Look 4 Less which showcases, well, designer looks and how to get them for less! Pretty inspirational if you ask me!

What I am trying to say in my convoluted way is it's REALLY easy to save money so why not go that extra mile and do it? Sign up for that email list. Check out a website for coupons before you whip out your card. Sign up for Ruelala.com and buy me something from Dior because my birthday is in a little over a month. C'mon!

Or at the very least, do you have a secret shopping trick to save money? Please share!

Shockingly Under-Advertised

As your resident shopaholic-on-a-budget I feel it's my duty to inform you of something.

Did you know today is Customer Appreciation Day at all TJX Stores including T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Homegoods.

What does this mean for you?

It means 15% off your ENTIRE purchase. No holds barred! (except for gift cards and layaway of course)

You know I'll be getting my max for the minimum on my lunch break....and probably after work.

In celebration: let's tell best TJs/Marshalls deal ever stories. I'll go first. Last year I scored a Michael Kors Ranger Bag for $99 (normally $249 in department stores) AND the year before that I found Gucci sunglasses for $49. I also found fabulous Kate Spade wine glasses for $12 a pop and DIDN'T buy them and to this day am still bitter about it.

Can You Tell From My Finger That I Hate You?

A scene at work:

Old Man: Woah how long did it take you to do your hair today?
Me: Bob, No you're not insulting my 'do!
Old Man: No, no I wasn't "insulting" just commenting.
Me: I will have you know a messy bun is "in".
Old Man: Don't worry, it doesn't bother me. I can tell from your hair that you're probably busy"

Long Weekends Are My Best Friend

Even though Monday is not an official holiday in my office (it's a floating holiday), I took it off because frankly I have not yet recovered from my week off a few weeks ago and I need to taste the sweet nectar of not working on a weekday yet again. I need my vacay fix!!

In any case, we have a full weekend planned. On a whim we booked a hotel room for tomorrow night in Portland (Maine) and are going to spend the day up there doing some shopping, taking a tour of the Shipyard Brewery, eating at Gritty's and then at night we have tickets to the see the Manchester Monarchs play the Portland Pirates. I won't go on record saying I LOVE hockey...but I do find it the most tolerable (enjoyable?) to watch out of all sports. This may have something to do with always sitting near the wine booth. A few mini bottles of Chardonnay and I can scream "Sieve! Sieve! Sieve!" with the best of them.

Sunday brings us back to Quincy, and back to a LONG awaited season premiere!

I also plan on finishing Wuthering Heights for book club next week. I read it what feels like 20 times in high school and college (I love me a tragic "romance") but it's been so long...it's amazing how much I had forgotten. That's the point of the book club though, to read "classics" we have read back in high school/college. Oh and they have to have a movie version.

Ralph Fiennes as Heathcliff? YES PLEASE.

I also plan on starting my short story. I entered NYC Midnight's Short Story Challenge for kicks and have a week to write a less than 2500 word short story. I receive the genre and subject matter via email tonight at midnight. Exciting! I miss creative writing and I look forward to getting useful feedback on my stuff.

Check back here on Monday for the first annual Pink Shoe Purse Sale (I'm selling almost all of my handbags and figured I would give blog world first pass. There are some really cute, barely or never used handbags in the batch and each will be priced at $5 plus shipping. Get psyched)

The Foodie's Guide To Frugality

Yeah so if you took a gander at my flickr yesterday you may have seen the joyous news about my 401K account. My earnings for the year? -40%.

Aw yeah aw yeah.

Whatever it's not worth getting mad about since it is a long term investment and it IS an investment, not a savings account. And many of us are in the same boat I am sure. We've all made adjustments to deal with the bad economy -in some cases huge sacrifices, in other cases just little every day decisions that add up to being able to save a little money. That is my kind of thing. The more money I can throw into my savings, the better . So I thought I would throw down a few little things I have done that have been saving me cash. This time around it's the food edition.

The Foodie's Guide To Frugality

Last year I picked up this pink Igloo soft-sided personal cooler from Target.

I needed something to bring my lunch to work in that could potentially keep it cold all day if the fridge was full (as it tends to be especially the day after big meetings when it's stuffed with leftover food). This small cooler is the PERFECT size. It holds a sandwich or Tupperware of leftovers, a can of soda, snacks, and the top has a compartment to stick an ice pack in to keep everything cool. I find that even without the ice if I put something cold in there, it stays cold for a good 3-4 hours. It was a great $15 investment and ensures that I don't waste money on buying lunch. With all the money I spend on groceries, it's nonsense to also spend money buying lunch every day. SO when we finish dinner at night I automatically pack the leftovers into Tupperware, stick them in the coolers (Adam has the same one in blue), throw in a special k bar and some snacks and stick it in the fridge so we're good to go in the morning. Last week alone Adam and I saved about $80 total by not buying lunch every day. Not a bad deal! Checkout
http://www.target.com/ or http://www.walmart.com/ to score one of your own.

ECS had a great idea of posting some lunch recipes/ideas for the times when you don't have leftovers. There are definitely times when I don't have any leftovers to pack. A few ideas are:
- Make a batch of Uncle Ben's Whole Grain Ready Rice (90 seconds in the microwave) and then nuke up some frozen veggies from a stir fry mix. Combine and enjoy! It makes around 2-3 servings so you can portion it out for and have lunch for a few days!
- Turkey and Laughing Cow sandwich. I love to sub in a wedge of light laughing cow cheese instead of mayo or mustard in a sandwich. It really adds a little kick!
- Perdue short cuts + bagged salad = super easy and hearty lunch.
- If you have time one night, whip up a batch of hearty and healthy soup to have for lunch throughout the week. I am a big fan of Weight Watchers Black Bean Soup and their Vegetable soup easy to make and super tasty
- I love a bean salad, inexpensive and protein packed. Try a combo of chickpea, lemon juice, tomato, cucumber, parsley, salt and pepper.

Speaking of groceries, another great resource is
http://www.upons.com/. I always check this site for coupons before I go grocery shopping. If I can save $2-$3 or even $5-$6 by perusing a website for a few minutes and printing out some coupons, why not do it? I do believe that store brand products are always a better deal (especially on things like canned or frozen veggies!) but there are a few items that I insist on brand names for. And to my knowledge Hannaford doesn't even have a store brand hummus and I almost always find a hummus coupon on there. Good deal!
Many supermarket websites also offer coupons and moneys saving tips on their websites. Hannaford's website offers this fab list of delicious (and budget friendly!) meal ideas and recipes..some as low as $1.50 a serving!

Another worthy investment is a decent coffee maker and travel mugs.

My parents gave us a fabulous grind and brew coffee maker for Christmas and neither of us has darkened the doorway of a Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks since. Having a coffeemaker with an automatic timer ensures that you have to be pretty damn lazy NOT to have fresh coffee in the morning. Just set it up at night before bed, set the timer and in the morning you have fresh ground, freshly brewed coffee. As far as beans go, I do have a Starbucks gift card to burn though but when that runs out I don't see myself spending $10 or more on a bag of beans every week. Luckily I have discovered
Eight O'Clock coffee, sold at supermarkets, that costs $5 a bag and comes in yummy flavors like french vanilla and hazelnut. Delicious!! Not to mention we are saving at least $20 a week, maybe more since we both sometimes made a Dunks run more than once a day. The one we have is on super sale at Costco for $70! If you drink as much coffee as we do it basically pays for itself in less than a month.

What if you are the type who likes to dine out a lot. Don't let trying to save money cramp your style, just be smart about it. For one, if the restaurants you dine out to regularly have an email list - get yourself on it! You will be the first to know about specials, and be privy to special discounts that people not in the know won't get. One of our favorite local dives has 25% off your meal on Mondays. Another local haunt sends out emails regularly advertising But one entree get one free if you print out the email. Nothing wrong with that!

Then check out http://www.restaurant.com/ for discounted gift certificates. You can get $25 to an array of places for just $10. Sure it doesn't apply to alcohol (sorry drunkies) and usually there is a minimum you have to spend to be able to use the gift certificate but it ends up being a great deal and if you are smart about what you order you can save so much!

And then, if you can book a reservation on http://www.opentable.com/, DO IT. You earn points for each reservation you make and honor , from 100 to 1000 points. And you can redeem every 2000 points you earn for a $20 gift card to any participating restaurant. That's drinks on the house right there just for making your life easier by reserving online!

And for my winos out there, I have not forgotten about you.

First you should definitely regularly check out the websites of local liquor store. (For South Shore locals I recommend http://www.curtisliquors.com/ and http://www.lukesliquors.com/ and http://www.gordonswine.com/) Many larger wine.liquor stores offer regular tastings that are either FREE or really inexpensive ($5-$10). And at most of these tastings you can then by the wines being sampled at a discount of up to 20%! Sign up for their email lists and get the heads up. And for drinking I have a few go to wines that are really inexpensive and still quite good.

Georges DuBoeuf Cuvee Blanc - a delicious white table wine that I have been serving at parties for over a year and is always a big hit. But at $11-$15 for a 1.5 ml bottle it's not a big hit to the wallet,
Barefoot Chardonnay - Barefoot in general is hit or miss with me but the Chardonnay continues to be a good wine at a great bargain ($6-7)
Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio - another clean and crisp plonk! $6 a bottle and goes down so easily. For red-lovers check out their Shiraz, an equally good value.

So as you can see, even little things like checking out a store's website or making reservation online or investing in a cute pink cooler can save you money!

What about you? Got any tips and tricks to share? Let's hear it!

And stay tuned next week for The Fashionista's Guide to Frugality!

Lucca Me!

In a fit of New Years purging, I attacked my closet over the weekend to weed out the undesirables and make sure for the first of a few shopping trips I'm making in the next few months. I, like Ina Garten, am getting back to basics. I have a lot of "fun" pieces in my wardrobe but no perfectly tailored white shirt. No super flattering high quality black pants. No sexy secretary pencil skirt (well, I DO have one but it is more appropriate for evening events since 1) it's satin and 2) when I sit down the slit on the thigh takes me from sexy secretary to raunchy receptionist). And closet space is as precious in our apartment as parking spaces downtown. So time to weed out what I don't need to make room for what I do.

Taking up the most room in my closet? Not clothes. Not shoes. Freaking HANDBAGS. I own about 20 handbags, and about 10-12 clutches. It is an abomination since I really only use: my Coach Hampton Pebble Leather bag in the spring/summer and my Michael Kors Ranger bag in the fall/winter. And of course I use the clutches for going out at night. But do I need the gold metallic tote I bought on Ebay 2 years ago? No. Do I need the hot pink hobo I had to get from Nine West last year? No I do not. I don't need 90% of them. So they will be gone soon.

Taking their place though will be a bag I actually WILL use. I need is a different kind of bag. For a while now I have been interested in so called "Crossover" bags. You know, smaller bags with really long straps that you can just wear across your body and forget about? I have never had one. For one thing I am usually a "big bag" lady, which can be a big pain when out on a shopping binge. You're either constantly carrying the bag, which is a pain. Or if you put it in a carriage of some kind you're Constantly like "OMG is my bag okay. Is my wallet still in there. Is someone going to snatch it?". This is what comes of reading your town's crime blotter for fun, I swear.

In any case a crossover bag appeals to me, though it is small, because most of then can house a smaller wallet , your phone, your keys and a lip gloss. Its like a hands free clutch! The problem is that I could never seem to find a cute one. One that didn't look like my mom's passport holder

Hello lover!

And hello woven leather, delicious silver color (that makes it seem less utilitarian) and hello decent size that can actually hold MORE than most of my clutches. It comes in other fun colors like boysenberry and poppy and of course you're basic black and brown. I happen to love a "fun" colored accessory though since I wear basic colors like black and white and gray so often. It is seriously the exact bag I have been looking for forever. And will now allow me to get rid of all my other "baggage" so to speak.

I love it.

And at $98 it's not so expensive that I want to cry. Especially since Elliot Lucca is a fabulous brand and I know it would last a long time.

What about you guys? Seen anything like this elsewhere?

Breast of Luck

I have been out of the house party scene for a while now. Or rather the house parties I attend involve wine and word games maybe the occasional Britney dance off. But this past Friday I attended my gorgeous cousin Melissa's going away party. Now that she is done with college she is leaving us and moving to Italy for the time being. Ciao Bella!! We are all extremely jealous.

But yes, Friday was her going away party at her mom's house which happens to be in the same city as my apartment. Her mom (my aunt) was absconding for the evening and the beer and beer pong was sure to flow like wine.  I have been feeling boring lately so this was just what I needed. A party with young folk (young meaning under 25!).  I may be 28 but I still know how to house party it up when neccesary! So I informed Andy and Adam that we would be attending and with that, a house party was on our agenda.

We arrived around 9:30PM, having had dinner with Andy's parents at Townsend's before (fabulous burger there, if you are in the Hyde Park area, check it out). We brought wine and vodka with us and settled down with drinking and gabbing and catching up and talking shiz. Melissa has a great group of friends and it is always so much fun to catch up with my local cousins. All in a night's work.

Later in the night, after midnight when we were all a tad worse for the wear, the second shift of the party showed up. Among this group was a "tres ivré" friend of a friend (you know the type). She immediately latched onto me because I was wearing a leopard coat and leopard is to drunk girls what red is to bulls. They can't resist it. My group and I humored her for a while and then moved on to a different section of a party.

Presently, she re entered the conversation but this time. Something was different. This time, one of her breasts was out.

Now, I am not a small-chested gal and I know that when wearing a low cut shirt, one can sometimes expose more than one wants. But that is what safety pins and self awareness are for. This girl had straight up one entire BREAST hanging out of the front of her shirt. It was one of those things when you see at first but don't compute. There was a moment of silence among Andy, Adam and I and then the silence was breached by my cackling shrieks of laughter.

I know, not the nicest reaction but it could not be helped. A breast!

Andy, ever the gentleman, said "Oh no honey we have to do something about this" and pulled her shirt up and kind of tucked her back in, while Adam stood aghast and I continued to laugh so hard I couldn't breathe. You know when you know you shouldn't be laughing and it just makes you laugh more? A BREAST!!!!

This poor soul evidently wasn't having my shrieky laughs or Andy's gentlemanly assistance because she responded by huffing into the next room, and moments later removing not one but TWO breasts from her shirt and shaking them in our direction.

TWO BREASTS.

I know I am like a 5 year old with a pee joke over here but I can not stop laughing about it. It was hysterical. And my poor cousin was so apologetic when she had no need to be, I mean we have all suffered the indignities of an unruly uninvited guest. And thanks to her I had a good laugh AND a good shot of self esteem because I may have engaged in drunk shenanigans at parties (hello I went to Umass) but I have never whipped out a private part to prove a point!

Ah kids today.

Also - it comes to my attention that today is NATIONAL DE-LURKING DAY. So come on all you li'l lurkers and tell me who you are. If you have a blog I would love to read it. If you don't that's fine too just say "oh hai" or something. I love new blog friends! If a blog entry about breasts can't get you to comment, nothing can.

Everyone Loves a Project

I am nothing without a project.

Having some kind of ongoing project, however small, really makes me happy. It might be something like finding the perfect pair of COMFORTABLE but chic black non flats but non high heels (still working on that one) or relining the bathroom cabinet shelves. It's fun to have something to work on when you have a spare moment.

During my week off at the end of December, I resolved that one of my new projects would be to redecorate the living room. Now, we have a pretty neutral palette in there (on purpose). Cream colored wall to wall carpeting, beige furniture, glass coffee and end tables, dark wood accents. A few years ago, inspired by a set of gorgeous Moroccan candles Andy gave me for my birthday, I switched out the green curtains and green and gray colored throw pillows and other assorted green and gray accents and switched in red and orange and yellow accents. It really made a big difference.

They are crappy photos but you get the general idea. It's a nice cohesive theme but I am bored with it. And ready to get a little more bright and a little more (Jenny, brace yourself) modern. Or at least work some more bright and modern elements into the room. If you follow me on twitter you might have seen me raving about my love for mercury silver recently. I love how it looks vintage with a little modern kick to it. I purchased a few accent pieces from Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel last week.

I also ordered mercury glass bird from Wisteria.com. I am on a bird kick lately, I can't lie. I want to see how it looks on the TV console and and depending on that maybe get a few more birds made in different materials (white porcelain, Herend (I WISH)).

I am also switching out the decorative wire plate we have hanging next to the TV now

For this magnificence from West Elm.

And switching or Van Gogh's Sunflowers hanging above the arm chair for a gorgeous framed, antique finish mirror our neighbor gave to us before he moved out.

If I had my way we would also be swapping out one of the other pieces of artwork currently in the living room for this amazing Marimekko wall hanging from CB2 that I have been in love with since they came out with it AND it's now on sale for freaking $25. Adam, however, hates it. Though he said we could hang it if he could also hang his Fenway panorama above the TV. This I cannot allow. So, sorry beautiful Marimekko print. Maybe someone out there reading this will give you a good home.

Now what's left to do is new curtains, a few new throw pillows and new napkins for the end tables (I buy decorative cloth napkins from Crate and Barrel or Pier One and use them to cover the top of our glass end tables). I would also LOVE to find an affordable silver accent table to put near the front door along the lines of this but maybe a little more "cool".

So, what's one of YOUR projects ?
