i look even worse today: if possible.
i remind myself of tom hanks in "the 'burbs" when he stumbles out of the fire at the end of the movie - and i wasn't even in a basement looking for bones when a furnace exploded! no fair! so now it's a war between my sense of responsbility and my vanity: whether or not i show my face at school today. i wonder which force is stronger? hmmmmm.....

i awoke this morning, made my way sleepily and grumpily into the bathroom and was greeted with a horrible spectacle upon seeing my image in the mirror: my right eye was almost completely swollen shut and i had truly become a modern day kyklopes!
ah!
after a moment of reflection at my newly afflicted state: i ran downstairs and immediately called dr. weisman (quel drama - i know! i could be coughing up lungs for weeks and never give le dottore a second thought, but the minute my appearance is affected it is off to the clinic i go!). anyway, he saw me right away and after a brief examination of the bedeviled eye, as well as a hearty speech on the neccessity of going to grad school, he gave me the blessed news that i have pinkeye aka conjunctivitis (bad news for my weekend bed mates jill and meaghan!). he then gave me a truly nasty eye ointment that i have not had the pleasure of coating my eye with since i was five years old, as well as full permission to blow off school and work (which i did promptly, bemoening my disfigured state to 2 very understanding professors and a wholly uninterested boss). i then lay on the couch all day and forced a strangely complacent peter to bring me snacks and rent me a movie while i squinted at him in a pirate-like fashion. and while i enjoy being wildly contagious, i fear that I must return to the public eye tomorrow and can only hope that my face is at least mildly more presentable.

"Hey Peter! That guy is talking about his testes again!"
- my mother just yelled this from the kitchen, and i sincerely have no desire to find out what she's talking about
the refrain i hear almost constantly at school on mondays is "i so don't want to be here today", usually accompanied by a huffing and throwing down of books, or else a roll of the eyes. i mean literally almost everyone i encounter says this, so it makes me feel like school is one of the only places where you have a large population of people together in the same place at the same time doing exactly what they most don't want to do. interesting...
i found a new bar this weekend that features a wide array of board games. you enter the bar, claim a table, and then are ushered to a back area where there are piles and piles of all kinds of games. this is a great idea, i think. we started off the night with Tabu, and i don't know about any of you, but the game is a little too easy so we modified it into "Drinking Tabu" which is to say not only can you not say any of the words on the card, but you can only talk about the word you're trying to describe in drinking terms. For instance: if the word is TV, then instead of saying something like "A device you watch sitcoms on" you would have to say something more along the lines of "What Dan put his fist through last time we played Power Hour with tequila." it not only makes the game more difficult, but also alot more funny if you ask me. this was followed by several rounds of Boggle, although since we were all pretty toasted by the end, we found ourselves utterly incapable of constructing words with more than two letters in them.
sunday: jill, meaghan and i did what we do best. which is to say we lay around jill's living room, eating wraps from Podima, leafing through copies of US Weekly and watching movies - until around 7PM when we began to feel really unproductive and called it a night in order to all be home in time to watch the SAG awards, during which I was very happy to see my girl, miss zeta jones, get her due reward.

when you wake up the morning after a drunken night out, there is a moment of blissful serenity, before you realize via shocking flashbacks things you may have said or done. i take comfort in the fact that, while i think i may have said something very wrong to Short-But-Fun. but when i try to remember our exact conversation - my end of it just sounds like a car horn blowing loudly. we can only hope.

i woke up this morning with a fake eyelash on my cheek and what feels like 20 cotton balls in my throat. ah hangovers - how i love thee.
the good thing about going out directly after work on a friday is that you get home early enough to still go back out and cause a fair amount of damage. last night, megs and i met jenny, jeannie, capella, diana, chad and damien as well as an assortment of jeannie's work friends at The Fours in Quincy. After we secured a table, we set down to business drinking and/or eating alot of meat and smoking and talking about what whores we all are. well, what a whore meaghan is. (just kidding). the party was moved then to 202 where I was attacked by Icarus who I'm sorry to say has grown up into a bit of a bastard. when i left there, jenny was sandwiched in between two punks on a couch, shooting me looks that i interpret to mean "bwah ha ha ha ha ha". this is what is great about jenny: she can give you a look that is the equivalent of when scarlett o'hara raises one eyebrow in Gone With The Wind, and yet her eyebrows never move. still, you get the gist of what she means.
after i arrived home, i realized it wasn't even midnight yet, and so I called Short-But-Fun who immediately came and picked me up, and we segwayed back to his house where he gave me lots of bottled water and allowed me to make him watch Moulin Rouge, after which I made him drive me home. so now i awake, with the whole day ahead of me and nothing to do. i love it.

yay!
i just got my phonecall comfirmation from Mark at the MDP headquarters - - i am officially delegating it up at the state convention this june at the tsongas arena. i was pretty sure i was going to get to go, only because they love having people under 30 years old (of which there are almost none at these types of functions). now the only problem that remains is to sneak meaghan, an independent, into the convention. she is small, so it is entirely possible she will fit in my bag.
now, for an unrelated story: i just parked my car in the driveway and was getting out of the car, singing the refrain of the song i had just been listening to. i did'n't notice that my neighbors were right next to me until one of them started snickering. i think it had something to do with the lyrics : "Wanted: Young man single and free. Experience in love preferred, but will accept a young trainee." (you know, the Honeycombs song "Want Ad"). I just hope they know I was singing the song, and that I wasn't just referencing an early attempt at a christmas list.

sometimes i feel like i have seasonal defective disorder: i.e. when it snows i want to kill someone
(can you tell by now that i love being able to use bold and italics? i do!)
anyway, in local news my hall and oates b emailed me today (refer to the 3/5 update/review, pay special attention to the fact that he was wearing a chicken hat). anyway, he is shorter than me and way older but will i go out with him? of course! well, at least once, so i will at least know what kind of car he drives/social and political connections/yearly income etc. i know from experience it is difficult to find these things out over the phone without sounding like you're giving an AARP survey.
haha. sometimes i am the worst kind of girl, and yet i can't help myself.

Things I do not like about a rainy day:
1) camoflauged, 3-inch deep puddles that sneak attack and seep nasty cement-water into non-rubber clad shoes.
2) the way my hair will not lie flat but instead rallies up and all about.
3) the smell of wet wool emanating from large hippies on the train
4) the polka-dot illusion rain creates on freshly ironed khakis
5) going to class!
Things I do like about a rainy day:
1) watching lifetime movies involving angry women and insipid husbands
2) sipping hot cocoa from a bright colored christmas mug
3) ordering hidous amounts of thai food and eating it sitting on my living room floor
2) the way my dog shakes himself silly when he comes inside from a walk
1) skipping class
(I just finished reading Sei Shonagon's The Pillow Book (read excerpt here) and have discovered the joy of making meaningless lists and categorizing everything i see.)

lack of motivation is a bitch, n'est ce pas?
the past two days have been very weekend-like in structure and nature, and so i awoke this morning convinced that it was monday. thank god it is not, although i would be even happier if it was friday.
monday night was the hall and oates concert that jill and i have been looking forward to ever since that day on the train, years ago, when after a hellish day we both broke out into "Rich Girl". we arrived at the orpheum fashionably late and were met with a perplexing problem: how to sneak in the flask past the security checkpoint? the matter was resolved by me placing the flask inconspicuously in the waistband of my pants.
this is not a good idea, as it turns out
as soon as the security guard went to look in my purse, the flask slipped into my pant leg. it would have been so quaint, i'm sure, if it had fallen out of my pant leg and onto the guard's foot. however, i managed somehow to shuffle to the ladies room before i incriminated myself. then, after appropriating H&O memorabilia, and making a B wearing a chicken hat who sang "Maneater" for us, we headed to our seats in the balcony and settled in for the melodious vocal stylings of Daryl Hall and John Oates . what can i say about the show? it was fabulous: we danced in the aisles, we screamed and hooted, we sang along, we passed the flask around, we screamed some more. we decided that our tribute band will be called "Oates in the Hall" rather than simply "Wild Oates", since it is unfair to leave Daryl out of the title, and once we are world famous, he might hold a grudge about it, you know. after the concert we headed to beerworks where, as we all know, free beer is the game. after chatting with the lovely miss collins, we adjourned to Porters to get very drunk, and continuted the party back at Jill's until 4AM, with Baccardi Limon shots and a viewing of Ghostbusters.
It's no surprise that Tuesday brought no school for to very hungover young ladies. but, since it was mardi gras after all, we ralllied our troops (i.e. Meaghan) for a night out at the Bourbon St Blowout at The Big Easy. of course, when push comes to shove (i.e. when we saw how much the cover was) we opted to settle for a more low key night drinking whiskey at Remington's and reading questions off of the Trivial Pursuit cards.
unfortunately, i will not be going out again until Saturday because i have no stamina, and more imortantly, no money. saturday night begins mine and meaghan's new project: Operation Networking. The venue this time? Wonderbar and then a party at Friend-Of-Jim's. I know that when you add the word "Drinking" with "Networking" it can have a tawdry conotation but this is not the case. It's all about branching out, let's face it :-)

my hairstyle when i left the house this morning: deep sidepart/ low messy bun
my hairstyle when i arrived at class, after trekking across the arctic tundra known as umass: bedhead meets don king
apparently Thermasilk hairspray is not all that it claims to be
also, while trying to get the top off of my bottle of Dior's "J'adore" ( i love saying that: dior's j'adore, dior's j'adore), anyway, of course it flew out of my hands and i spilled a good portion of the perfume all over my neck and shoulders area. Couple this with wearing a wool scarf for my morning commute and you have a veritable cloud of scent when i remove the scarf. i am this close to giving myself a headache.
anyway,
the theme of the weekend: an oldie but goodie
Same song, I'm back, been around the world
Ro-mancing girls that dance with girls
From, Club Cheetah, to Club Amnesia
The Venus in L.A., Bubblin' in Dublin
Can't deny me, why would you want to
You need me, why don't you try me
Baby you want to, believe me!
a little jay-z neevr hurt anyone. this weekend reaffirmed my thought that when the Triumverate Plus One convenes, we are possibly the funnest people on earth. i don't want to sound conceited, or make any of you with less fun friends than i have feel bad, but it's true. we walk into a club/bar/party and people are drawn to us like moths to a flame. is it our ascerbic wits? our glowing, crest white-stripped smiles? andy's penchant for buying rounds on him? possibly, although i think it's something else. as andy drunkenly said to bill at our table at Gargoyle's late saturday night. "It's the self-confidence thing! it SO turns you on, doesn't it!". Succinctly: when we walk into a club/bar/party: we own it. it doesn't matter if the crowd is dull, the music is bad, the girls look slutty: we turn it all into our good time: whether that means sitting in a booth in Porter's, drunkenly screaming our re-written Destiny's Child lyrics ("the shoes on my feet/ your ass bought it/ the clothes i'm wearing/your ass bought it!"), or arm wrestling strange men (andy :-) , or smuggling martinis out of bars. i love you guys (as my good friend emily saliers put it) like i love the stars above.
alright, aside from drunken revelry on friday/saurday night not much went on seeing as i worked all day saturday and sunday. blah. we just got in the new etienne aigner sandals for spring and i am in love, i must say.
so now i sit in anticipation of a crazy monday night out with the fabulous miss jill. did i mention we're going to hall and oates tonight? i cannot wait to hear our theme song ("Rich Girl") straight from the actual source. Extreme Pre-gaming + being the youngest people at the show + apres party at Porters can only lead to absolute mayhem. details tomorrow.......
