Looking Good

I tend to think about what I look like a lot.

I don't mean that in a "I put a lot of effort into how I look" kind of way but more like, when I make a certain face I think I know what that face looks like. In fact, when I make certain faces (and I make faces a whole lot) I think of what famous person I look like when I make that face. Without looking in a mirror. And without taking it account whether or not I look anything like that famous person. In fact, I usually only think of famous people with whom I have nothing physically in common.

Anyway, lately that famous person is Catherine Bell from my aforementioned new favorite show, Army Wives.

As someone who has real trouble smiling without showing my teeth, I envy this woman her toothless faux smile. So, say I am at work and I have cause to faux half-smile at someone. While I do so, I will think in my head "I am so Catherine Bell right now"

But if it so happens that I catch a glimpse of myself while doing this, I see that I look less like Catherine Bell and more like this dude.

I am telling you, fake smiling at someone never works out for me. Either I smile at you for real, or I open my mouth, squint my eyes and demand a Baby Ruth.

Ok MAYBE it's not quite that bad. But seriously how do people fake smile without looking like a total asshole? That is a serious skill if you ask me.

I could not agree more. I do however think you should just maybe embrace your natural smile :)

oh girl i totally embrace my natural smile. I am just bad at the fake smile, like when you don't really have a smile in you at that given moment but have to pretend you do. you know.

The positive side of this situation is that once people have seen your fake smile, they probably won't come back for more. Eventually you'll run out of situations in which you have to fake smile.

I don't try to smile without showing my teeth, but I totally do the whole "I look just like this person right now" thing as well! Even if I look nothing like them.

I thought I was the only one who did that - so glad I'm not!

Oh girl. It took me a while, but I finally realized....it's all in the eyes. They're a dead giveaway. Practice half smiling in the mirror, and work on the eyes. Give em eyes that look sincere.

Do I sound like a heartless, shallow bitch?
Perhaps. But a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...especially in corporate america.
...Hey, my mom always DID say I should go into acting...

I totally agree, it IS all in the eyes. A fake smile on my face feels as heavy as cement. You know it isn't real when the smile doesn't reach your eyes.

Oh, P.S. that last comment was me by the way. LOL. -Nicky

Yeah, I agree. You can spot a fake smile a mile away. The eyes don't shine as much...the mouth is more terse. I don't know anyone who can pull off a fake smile. A faint smile, that's a different story.

You are much prettier than Catherine Bell, for the record. :)

"Either I smile at you for real, or I open my mouth, squint my eyes and demand a Baby Ruth."

That's so me. I can't pull off the fake smile for CRAP.

Hee! Having grown up in the South I've been schooled in the fake smile. However, I don't like being "fake," so to think about doing it or to do it gives me a headache. So I reserve it only for those rare moments.

It's a skill that I learned while I had braces!!!
