Whiter Shade of Scale

I need help.

This time of year, it is a fact of life that your skin will be dry. I have most of it under control. I use a fabulous face lotion and I have an array of luxurious body lotions that I use depending on what my perfume plans are for the day. In general I have nice, soft skin.

With one minor exception.

My hands.

Despite constant moisturizing from my arsenal of hand lotions at work AND at home (which includes treatments from Vaseline Intensive Care, Avojuice (OPI), Clinque, Bath and Body Works and Aveeno), my hands are dessert wastelands and instead of fabulous rings I have tumbleweeds.

So please, help me and those who must shake my hand and tell me your favorite, heavy duty but not greasy, pleasant smelling hand lotion.

You will have my eternal gratitude (along with that of my newly made acquaintances).

It's not hand lotion per se, but I use the Body Shop Nut Body Butter. It works awesome. And only the Nut kind - I've tried others (mango, coconut) and they didn't work nearly as well. I was an obsessive hand washer (think like more than 20 times a day) when I brought my daughter home from the hospital and my hands were disgustingly dry. I started using that body lotion on my hands and within a DAY they were back to normal.

Truth be told though they now have a pink grapefruit one that I am dying to try.

I just found my way to your blog and wouldn't normally comment as a "first-timer", but I'm a lotion addict and suffer from dry skin as well.

Try using a foot cream on your hands at night (I like the Peppermint Intensive Foot Rescue cream from the Body Shop. It comes in a black tub). It is thicker and more moisturizing than a hand lotion. If you really want to be "hardcore", apply the cream and then sleep with gloves or socks on your hands (if you can stand it).

I've also heard of people using udder cream on their hands. Apparently it works wonders. Some drug stores now sell it in in "human friendly" packaging. Look for the cow spots.

Kiehls - Unusually Rich But Not Greasy At All Hand Creme with SPF 10. I keep one at home and one in my desk.

I also like the L'Occitane "la mer" line but its a bit heavy for during the day I find.

Please let me know if you find a miracle product. My hands are so dry that I now have cuts on every single joint and knuckle where my skin has cracked and bled.
I have tried everything. Best so far have been Badger Balm (which, if you need as much as I do, gets a little greasy) and Aveeno (which though lovely, still hasn't been up to my needs). If worse comes to worse, I'll have to turn to what my sister's Dr. told her to do for her dry feet. Mix some Vitamin E drops with Vaseline, slap some socks (or in this case, gloves) on those babies and go to bed.

Having the same problem. Therefore, I would also benefit from said advice.

Two suggestions: Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream, which I use at night, and the best hand cream ever, Bliss High Intensity Hand Cream. It does works fabulously, smells great, and sinks right into your skin.

If you are looking for a CVS fix (I know you love it there...as do I!)I use Johnson's Softcream Extra Care Healing Hand Cream. It has a touch of baby oil and works absolutely wonderful for your hands.

My hands are pretty dry too, but I actually shook hands with someone this weekend who then said "I love how soft and smooth your hands are!" So I guess try either Clinique Water Therapy or SkinMilk's Body Cream.

Good luck!

It's ridiculously expensive, but La Mer's hand cream is by far the best I've tried - it does miracles. My husband's hands were bleeding and cracking and the La Mer lotion made them good as new. If you don't want to drop $70 on hand cream (I only have it because a coworker gave me a free sample she'd received), I also really like Fresh's Sugar Blossom hand cream.

Crabtree & Evelyn Gardeners Hand Therapy. It is all of the things you mentioned above and I just love it.

have you tried a paraffin treatment?, I've heard they're the best thing for extra dry hands and feet.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I ADORE Eucerin PLUS Intensive Repair Hand Cream. It's about $5 and it works so well on my chapped hands. I work for for a hospital, so hand washing is a relgion at work and it takes a toll on my hands. This stuff really makes your hands feel softer and heals the dryness and cracking.

I agree with megagirl: Bliss High Intensity Hand Cream is the best there is: smells good, sinks right in with no greasy after-feel and works fabulously. It's a little pricey, but since I have also become a dragon-handed lady, I think it's worth it.

Good Luck!

Okay, I have to throw my two pennies in (late). :-)

It's not a lotion (at all), but Manicure Miracle from Athena's (www.athenashn.com - this is home novelties, so beware clicking at work) is fantastic. It is a scrub with all these great oils in it. I accidentally spilled most of the oil out of mine when I moved and it is still the best product ever!

Two suggestions... I packed this and it's beyond hand creme perfection I got it as a gift but I'm sure they sell it online...

"Ahava Mineral Hand Cream"

and, in my trial bag - Principessa Cattiva Diva hand cream

I just used this a few minutes ago. The Body Shop Almond Oil Daily Hand and Nail Cream. It smells yummy too. I also bring my own soap (same kind) to the bathroom during the winter because the work stuff is industrial strength and god awful for retaining moisture.

OMG. I know you're not going to want to order hand cream you've never tried online, but seriously...Google Sea of Spa handcream. My mom brought me some from Israel, its the best in the world. Everyone takes it from me--men and women alike. It feels like nothing else.
