On saturday Adam and I spent most of the day at my dad's studio which was having it's annual Open House Weekend (as i mentioned earlier).
His studio is actually a really old warehouse/factory that has been converted into over 100 artists' studios
Even the walls of the hallways between studios are covered in art, both for purchase and just for show. This was a group of handmade handbags for sale under the name "Sassy Sacks"
Paintings in an alcove.
adam double fisting one of MANY glasses of wine we had in the hall
after we had explored the first three floors of studios, we headed to my dad's studio on the fourth floor to check out what he had on display/hang out with him and my mom.
here are some examples of his kickass work
Herby 1
Herby 2 (and my mom and Adam in the background)
(at my parents home they have both Herbys in the backyard garden holding votive candles. )
Sculpture of hand clicking mouse
doorway/paintings/out of control Ficus
more paintings..the one on the top right is one of my favorite's. he calls it "Intelligent Design"
Soapstone Sculpture entitled "Attidude 3"
Bar Relief "Old Man with a Guitar" . An excerpt from the Wallace Stevens Poem "Man with a Blue Guitar" hangs behind it
Marble Sculpture "And My Heart Began To Feel". (this piece promted Adam to say "you dad is kind of a freak)
Hyphenated Woman (we have one in copper hanging in our living room)
Portrait of an Old Man
What is this, Easter Island?
He sells each set of features as a set
My favorite painting. I asked for a copy of it for Christmas (framed, not on a dirty easel, although that has it charm too)
I think my dad is a pretty talented guy and of that I am insanely jealous. It was really nice to see people wander in and around his studio, asking him what kind of stone he uses, how he finds it, what inspires him. that's his favorite part of this whole thing. I'm glad that what started out as a little hobby has grown to be such a source of pleasure in his life. I hope to have something like that of my own one day. (but it certainly won't be painting...when i was little my mom used to take me to art lessons at the Museum of Fine Art and after a year the instructor said to my mom "hopefully she's musically inclined?".)
The rest of the Open House was great. We saw a lot of beautiful art that we can't afford but someday hopefully will be able to. We drank tons of wine and ate tons of cheese/nuts/assorted goodies, and I picked up some really pretty, delicate Japanese paper earrings, some note cards and handmade mini easels for displaying postcards/photos..and don't worry Megs and Kim, your cards are on their way!

of course! mostly because i am afraid of calculating postage incorrectly for international mail, so at least if it goofed i can get it back and resend it! :-)

Wow, your dad is so talented! I love hyphenated woman, and the features...really, all of it is great!

His work is great!! I bet you're so proud!
My dad's an artist, too...he mainly does Oils (landscapes, people, etc...)
I remember growing up in his studio, just staring at the paintings, wondering if i was going to be able to do that when i grew up.
Fortunately, i DO take after him, and not my mother, who can't draw a stick figure (really).
I'm insanely jealous of artists that DO something w/ thier work (galleries, showings, etc...) I can never figure out how to break into that.
That's really inspiring. Thanks for posting these pics.

I don't usually care much for sculpture, but his stuff is wonderful. You must be proud.
