Couch Confessions

Well here we are day three of the Broken Foot Bonanza. I was a little high on painkillers when I wrote that previous entry. Pretty coherent for coming off of a 3 Vicodin haze, if I do say so myself.

Things Chez Fracture are plugging along. I spent the whole weekend on the couch or in bed with my right leg foot elevated and iced like a good patient should. Adam has been very attentive, bringing me snacks, fluffing my pillows, cleaning up the wretched pedicure I gave myself (hello, just because one is broken one does not want to look like a hobo, no?). And I haven't had a Vicodin since Saturday, preferring to handle the pain with Ibuprofen since I assume once I am casted the pain will be worse. For now I just have a splint and ace bandage when I can loosen when it hurts or I have an itch and I hear you can't do that with a cast. Sadly, Adam tells me that they won't "put the cast on loose" even if I ask nicely. So there you have it.

I have the hang of my crutches and so today while Adam is at work I have successfully made myself a grilled cheese (what? That's an awesome breakfast), poured myself a squeezie bottle full of diet ginger ale which I carried back to the couch in my mouth AND carried my phone, wallet and bottle of ibuprofen from the bedroom to the living room by tucking it under my neck. I am a frigging wallaby over here, who needs your hands to carry shit?

My mom is picking me up today for my appointment with the orthopedic surgeon at 3PM, where we will find out if I just get sent home with a cast (do they come in leopard print?) or if surgery is needed THEN a cast. So I will check back in later with more SCINTILLATING details. Thanks so much for all the well wishes! They are much appreciated.

:::::UPDATE:::::

Excellent news:
No Surgery
and
NO CAST!

That's right, I am in something called a fracture boot that I am to wear most of the time but can take off for showers (score!) and to stretch my foot out so it doesn't get stiff. Unfortunately it only comes in black but as Jenny pointed out I can certainly accessorize it maybe with a smart scarf?

I know, white socks and a black shoe - appalling.

In any case I am in great spirits! I am so happy not to have a cast and ESPECIALLY not to have surgery. I think the ER doctor was a little doom-n-gloom because the orthopedic surgeon was pumped about how well this should heal and basically said if you have to break any bones in your foot, these are the best ones to do so with. I am out of work for the week and will be trying to become somewhat weight-bearing on my bum foot so that next week if I am able to drive (which I plan on being able to with a little determination and a lot of ibuprofin).

Now how to entertain myself for a week, apartment-bound? Someone needs a hobby!

Sounds like you are hanging in there like a champ. Good luck this afternoon. I think they should at least let you pick a color for your cast. You could draw your own animal print on it.

Hi there I just saw your blog and first off good luck today at the doctor and hope it's not to painful,I broke my foot 2 weeks ago and in a cast now and the only part that hurt was when she had to put my foot at a 90 degree angle to be in the cast. They have many colors to choose from,I got blue because white get's to dirty. Anyway feel free to write and vent,tippytop100@gmail.com,Dave.

Hey sweety, as far as I recall when I broke my elbow (and wrist later), it doesn't hurt as much anymore once it's in the cast.

HOWEVER. Itches like bitch after a while.

Hope you're feeling better soon. Hang in there! When i dislocated my elbow in college (casted for six weeks) I took full advantage of the situation including (but not limited to) free drinks at the bar, people carrying my stuff, friends cutting my food for me at dinner, etc . . .

I hope you just need a cast and not surgery as well!

Hey Swap Partner! Hope you feel better soon so that you can enjoy your gifts. They should reach you soon...

I hope they give you a waterproof one. That was the BEST! Especially during the summer. It wasn't smelly at all because I could wash it every day. :) It also helped the itching to run cold water in it!

Come to Weston. We can be house bound together and my daily visiting nurse can check your foot!

good luck on your recovery! i've broken my foot three times now, twice playing sports and once unceremoniously skipping. So don't feel bad, it happens to the best of us!

Start thinking of elaborate stories as to how you broke it and see who believes you. Popular tales can include include spelunking and cattle herding.

No cast - that is FANTASTIC. Ugh, you can't imagine how itchy you get in that horrid thing. Yay! SO happy for you.

Isn't it funny that when we're stuck in work we think of all the fun things we COULD be doing if we weren't trapped at our desks. And then you have a glorious week of freedom, (albeit, a bit handicapped but freedom none the less) and suddenly all thoughts of fun are gone.

:)

Sarah!!! I'm so sorry about your foot! But it sounds like you have the "best" kind of break there is...lucky! Hang in there! And heal up soon.

Good to hear you're not going to need a cast! Hmmm - is recreational drinking considered a valid hobby? ;)

Oh man, I am so sorry for you. That sounds bad. But no surgery and no cast sound great!!
Hm, what to do a whole week alone in the apartment:
- reading is a great thing
- watching some nice DVD's you wanted to watch for a long time but Adam didnt want to see them
- chat with some friends via Internet and distract them from work
;-)

Now i'm no doctor, but that looks like a left foot to me. :)

Glad to hear you won't need surgery or a cast! Get well soon.
