Scent of a Woman

misc. 007

The other day I was walking through Filene's basement with Adam when I stopped short at the perfume display. Nextled in between bottles of Lacoste and Ralph Lauren Hot, was an imposing bottle with an intricate turquoise and gold label. I said to Adam "OMG IT'S 4711" to which he replied "Say what?" and I had to tell him about how my grandmother, Nonni, always wore this when I was little and I loved it so much, it always reminded me of her. She gave me a little travel bottle of it when I was young and I used it as sparingly as if i were liquid gold. I didn't even know it was still made and then voila! Bottles and bottles of it at Filene's Basement. So of course I bought a big ol' bottle and have been using it every day.

So what if it is esentially German aftershave? I love the clean crisp smell and I love that it reminds me of Nonni when I use it. It's amazing how a scent can really just change your whole mood.

And now I am worried the next time we speak I will be telling you how much I love wearing Jean Nate because it reminds me of my mom.

I actually have a big bottle of Jean Nate bath splash in storage in the States because it was my Nana's. And every time I smell it, I think of her.

Ha, this is so cool. 4711 actually reminds me of my Granddad :)

Did you know that it is originially from Cologne, close to where I grew up?! :)

i think almost every grandma wore 4711. mine totally did, too. (i've never heard of a grand-dad using it though...) we were actually just talking about 4711 during our girls' weekend and the stories i heard there totally prove the point. i shall go to a perfume store and smell it in the near future. awww, childhood memories :)

That bottle is adorable. I have no idea what my grandmother wore - she used atomizers so I'm pretty much s.o.l. on that.

Lys I love atomizers. I started to try to collect them but being that I am a total klutz I broke the first two I got. Maybe it's time to try again!

Also: I love my German blog girls who actually know what 4711 is!

My mom was a huge fan of Jean Nate. I was just looking at it last night at CVS. Don't even tempt me.

How about some Love's Baby Soft? So 8th grade...wistful.

Ahaha if we are going on that tangent then I need to invest in some Sunflowers.

Oh my god. Jean Nate bath splash. Why was that ever invented, first of all, and second of all, why did all of our moms have it??

Hi, I recently found your blog and it's great. My mom totally used Jean Nate. I think I'm going to have to buy a bottle of it. How about Evangeline? My mom also used to use that.

My Mom wears beautiful, and every time I smell it, it makes me think of her. And, speaking of nostalgic perfumes, my favorite 80s perfume was definitely Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth. I did love me some Baby Soft and Sunflowers, too, though:)

OMG, so funny - I'm so like that whenever I smell Alyssa Ashley musk because THAT is my Mom. :)

To this day, when I smell cherry tobacco smoke from a pipe -it brings me right back to my pediatrician's office- whom I adored by the way. No matter who's smoking that pipe -it's Dr. Zeitler I see in front of me!!!
