Scaredy Cat

Around this time of year, I start to get really psyched for scary movies. Now, my idea of a scary movie and your idea of a scary movie might be entirely different but suffice it to say I like to be scared. Not so scared that I have to leave a light on at night but like pleasantly frightened.

The thing is, I am a bit of a baby.

For instance, since there is a "Fear Fest" movie extravaganza going on On Demand these days I decided to watch a scary movie last night, while Adam was busy with his hockey in the living room. I chose a fairly dumb looking movie called "When a Stranger Calls" because 1) I didn't think it would be really scary, maybe just entertainingly so and 2) Most of the others were ones Adam wanted to watch with me. So I settle in for some shitty scary movie watching. It was about what I expected, bad, not that scary, and stupid. BUT even with all these qualities I still lay awake later that night a little freaked out. Which makes the whole thing even MORE dumb because:

1) I never give my number out, so clearly a Stranger ain't Calling
2) I was sleeping right next to someone who would probably try and protect me if a Stranger DID Call, or at least I could be like "Take him, Not me!".

Regardless, I had this uneasy low hum of scaredy-catness going on until the wee hours of the morning. And this was over a bad movie that wasn't even that scary.

I am a WUSS, I tell you.

Clearly I need to man up. In my younger days, my girlfriends and I used to rent terrible horror movies every Friday night and watch them at my friend Jenn's house. Movies like Witchboard, The Evil Dead, Satan's School For Girls to name a few. When we were in middle school (okay, high school!) Jenn and I once watched Candyman while we were home alone and then became hysterical with terror about a mysterious package that appeared on her front porch immediatlely following the movie. It may or may not have turned out later to be the front door knocker obscuring the view from the peephole.

In any case, having forgotten my scary movie roots I am on a quest to work my way up to a real scary movie this month. I am thinking maybe Saw? Although I heard the Descent is terrifying as well. I will let you know how this quest goes (probably at 1AM when I can't sleep over whatever crappy horror movie I try next!)

(this movie is scary I don't care what anyone says!)

Ahaha!! 2 words: "Darkness Falls"! Stupidest movie ever and yet that night I was afraid to even open my eyes!

Oh geez...I'm scared of EVERYTHING. Seriously. Lord of the Rings made me cry. I don't even bother trying to watch anything that even pretends that it might be scary.

Got a little creeped just reading this post, actually...

Um, Candyman gave me nightmares for months. I still freak out when someone says it out loud.

My boyfriend and I watched "1408" last night. When we went to bed I noticed a light was left on in the living room, but I wouldn't go in there to turn it off. I made him do it. So, I recommend this one! Don't watch alone.

I hate scary movies so much, but I remember watching Candyman when I was in like 5th grade, and being freaked out to say "Candy Man" in front of the mirror 5 times! ahahha

candyman still gives me nightmares of being covered in bees.... *shudder*

I'm a fan of ghost story-esque scary movies.. like The Shining, and The Exorcist...can't really recommend any though...The Others if you haven't seen it?

I'm psyched that other people think Candyman is scary. I was talking about it with some friends earlier end everyone seems to think I was being a wuss!

I have seen The Others and actually liked it although it was pretty depressing. Oh and The Shining and Excorcist are also good!

P.S. I love the Poltergeist movies. don't judge me.

OMG, I can't even look at the Candyman cover without getting the heebie-jeebies! I'm with you, I used to LOVE scary movies, but now? Se7en terrifies me. Certain episodes of Law and Order: SVU keep me up sometimes. Talk about needing to man up!!

Sarah said...

haha I can relate to that. there are certain Law & Order CI and SVU episodes that I just can't watch when i'm home alone late at night!

A few years ago my little sister and I went to a late night showing of The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Holy God was I terrified when I got home and generally very little scares me.

That movie is pretty creepy. Especially the way people's faces change when she starts freaking out. eek!

I've never seen Candyman, clearly I've got to add it to my Netflix queue.

I can't handle certain scary movies. The new "Torture Flicks" that are poplar right now = no way!!! I have NO desire to see Saw or Hostel, etc. But I do love me some old-school Nightmare on Elm St. or something. Anything I can laugh at is good. But if you want quality - please, if you haven't seen it, rent Pan's Labyrinth. It's scary and enchanting all at the same time. It's one of my new favorite movies. It's Spanish (but subtitled). I saw it in the theaters, then got it for my birthday. Actually, I think maybe I'll watch it this weekend. (o;

Candyman is very scary. I once got off a bus in Chicago and realized I was standing in front of the Cabrini-Green housing project. It still freaks me out to this day. Have you watched the "Hellraiser" series?

If Candyman and When A Stranger Calls scare you, Saw might really frighten you. It's amazingly gruesome and has a great plot, but I'm a serious scary movie fan and even it gave me the heebie jeebies.

That didn't stop me from watching all three in one night. :)

Saw, Hostel et al aren't scary movies - they're torture porn. don't bother with them!

we just got The Exorcist from netflix for a halloween weekend viewing - jason has never seen it! i was like wtf seriously, i'm the biggest baby in the world and i've see The Exorcist!

also - a thoroughly entertaining old scary movie we just watched On Demand - The Omen. i just love those devil children!

Libs if you watch it you have to tell me what i think!

Kate - was it the original Omen? I love that one!! I mean I saw it once and it scared the crap out of me but I loved it nonetheless.

The original Omen is great but I warn all of your against the remake. It was horrible! It actually bored me.

The only remake I found slightly scary as of late was The Amityville Horror. Also on the plus side you get a shirtless Ryan Reynolds (if you are into that sort of thing).

kate.d. said...

yup, the original.

i remember when the remake came out last summer - i was like, "julia stiles? playing a devil child's mom? wow i'm old!" :)

ha! there is a video store going out of business near us. We got lots-o-Halloween cheese! The Exorcism of Emily Rose scared the CRAP out of Matt and I, everybody else said it was lame!

But when I was little, Ammitiville Horror...whew boy.

Ooh...Candyman IS so scary! I remember watching it with my best friend back in middle school...home alone too of course. We were so scared to go the bathroom by ourselves after that. SCARY!
