Circle of Life

Last week brought with it the demise of a much beloved member of our family

Briscoe, our betta fish.
(That isn't a picture of him, he was notoriously camera shy. But this one looks just like him, as do most betta fish)

An energetic three years old; Briscoe enjoyed being sullen, hiding in faux plants, and getting pissed off by his own mirror image. He is survived by me and Adam, who will always remember the way his water would get super cloudy pretty much as soon as we cleaned it.

Briscoe went on to the big fish tank in the sky on Thursday evening, after a short bout with some kind of general malaise. We mourned for the appropriate amount of time (two days, in the fish world anything else and it really looks like one is dwelling) and visited our local pet supply boutique on Saturday to pick up the latest addition to our family.

Meet Jack McCoy, a red ryukin goldish. (Ryukin means "sassy" in Japanese, clearly)

Jack enjoys hiding out in his fake rock and looking pretty. We hope he will be very happy in his brand new two gallon home. If we take good care of him, he could live to be as long as one foot! Given that he is what, like 3 inches now that is a whole lot of potential fish. If all goes well we plan on upgrading to a five gallon tank in a few months and eventually a 10 gallon tank, and then ultimately one of those wall length babies that you can put scuba gear on and dive into.

I think that would look great in the living room

Aww! So sorry for your loss, but your new fish is very sassy indeed! I have been considering getting a new fish, since my goldfish from college, Louie, was unable to make the move with me. I haven't decided, though.

With that huge tank in your living room, people might think they are visiting the dentist or a chinese restaurant! Ha.

We had a lot of small pets when I was young (hamster, fish, bird) and whenever one would die, my mom would tell my brother and i that it's mom came and took it back home. ha! it worked until i was about 5.
