This morning, a few minutes after I left my apartment, I noticed I was being tailed by a cop on a motorcycle. He didnt have his lights on but I caught a glimpse of the neon green of his windbreaker and instantly slowed down about 10 mph. Too late though, he began waving at me but when I glanced again, It wasn't a "Move to the side of the road, missy" wave (a wave I have seen way too many times) but more like a "Haaaay!" kind of wave. At the next stop light I looked again as he waved hello and realized it was not, in fact a cop. And the neon green was not a windbreaker but a giant Incredible Hulk costume.
And so Halloween is upon us.
I have been taking advantage of all the "scary movies" that have been on TV for the past week and watched The Excorcist, Children of the Corn, It (most of It at least, that shizz is LONG), The Nightmare Before Christmas. I like scary movies for the most part but I don't like seeing them in the theater or when I am home alone or at night. So as long as it's daytime and I have at least one other person with me I am good to go. But as wimpy as I sound I LOVE being scared.
And I pretty much always have. I especially always loved scary stories.
When I was young, my best friend Lindsey and I had a couple of editions of "Scary Stories toTell in the Dark" . Now I still, at 26 years old, consider the stories in those books to be the scariest stories ever, so imagine reading them when you are 11 years old, in your friends 200 year old house with no parents' home, at night, during a rain storm and then having a seance in the dining room with a ouija board even though you are not completely sure what a seance is.
I know, I am getting all "The Craft" on you. But it was like psychological chicken with myself. I see just how scared I can get before I have to fling on the lights and put the TV on.
Anyway, a few years later I started reading Lois Duncan and RL Stine. Remember "Don't Look Behind You?" and "Summer of Fear"?. I would start reading one at night before bed, then of course become entrenched in the story and HAVE to finish it and then of course by the time I did it would be 2AM and I am alone in my room, the only one awake in my house and how am I supposed to sleep now?
But of course I read them all, basically.
Tonight I will celebrate Halloween the old fashioned way, with a themed cocktail party. And what's scary to me now? The fact that I spent 1 hour last night cutting out cheese to look like candy corns.
How times have changed.

If it makes you feel any better (re: the "wimpy" statement), I am quite possibly the biggest chicken ever. Seriously. Reading about you watching scary movies and reading scary stories made me nervous. Just walking past the movie "Bogeyman" (or however they spell it) scares me because two years ago I dated a guy who threatened to make me watch it. It's sad, really.
i was just talking about scary stories to tell in the dark. didn't we read some of those in the cemetary during 'lock-ins'. good times. i am like you. love love love to be scared, love scary movies, but am the biggest baby ever. i watched the original texas chainsaw massacre with kiley the other night. it started at around 7pm and i thought i was having a heart attack. SO scared! the first time you see leatherface might be the scariest moment in movie history, in my opinion anyway. ok this is long. i like you. <3 danielle
p.s. i'm wearing my skull vans today. they are not work appropriate, but it's HALLOWEEN!
i dont know if i can handle leatherface. i saw a commercial for hellraiser and had to cover my eyes. that is actually my jam. covering my eyes for 1/2 the movie but being like "wait whats happening? whats happening now?". haha i am so annoying.
i am wearing a black and purple tiara today in honor of halloween! i <3 those skull shoes! and i <3 u.
Happy Halloween! Those were two of my favorite teen lit scary novels! You have great taste ;)
Oh I loved that book. Remember the one about the girl who had the velvet ribbon tied around her neck, that was definitely my favorite.
Cheese cut like candy corn - I do hope you'll post a picture
Happy Halloween, lady! This is definitely my favorite holiday. No presents need to be exchanged, and the only pressure is to have a kick-ass costume. Which is my bag for sure!
However, I will be laying low this evening and passing out candy to children (if I don't eat it all first, of course). I partied waaaay too much at 2 separate Halloween Bashes this weekend. (See MySpace pics for evidence)!
Have a great one!
P.S. Me = biggest horror movie wuss ever. But I've been craving them lately due to the season...
kim - we are bar-shopping for now, trying to find a good deal!
amy - thanks girl!
k - i made all these goodies for my party bu pointwise i can only afford, oh, 3 crackers and some cheese.. it's all good though! will live vicariously through my guests :-)
suz - you better believe i will post pics.
count me among the chickens, but i actually don't like being genuinely scared. i have a low threshold for fear.
but we have been watching "most haunted" on the travel channel lately. i like it, mainly because i can get the atmosphere of scary stuff, and then end up laughing at the ridiculous theatrics of the show (it is such a sham!). i think there's a "live!" version on tonight for like three hours.
Happy Halloween!! Candy Corn???
UH... candy corn shaped cheese... that's brilliant! Can't wait for a picture.
I absolutly cannot tolerate anything even remotely scary, unless of course they are about zombies or vampries, for some odd reason I like them (except queen of the dammed, I think I actually left the theater before the end).
I actually don't got to haunted anythings anymore either, if I get startled or scared, I fall FLAT ON MY ASS everytime, literally.
i am so easily freaked out when it comes to being startled...i dont even like when someone pretends to pop a baloon in front of me. i am an inadvertant SCREECHER like you wouldnt believe. someone comes up behind me at work and i freaking scream. it is out of hand!
Fuck. I don't watch scary movies at all. Well, not true, I dig anything serial killer, but otherwise, uhm, not so much. I used to not even be able to watch Law and Order by myself, but have since gotten over that!
Candy corn shaped cheese..girlfriend, we need to talk. :)
i know, i know. i am slightly out of control
Oh my god, those "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" are the creepiest things ever, especially the illustrations! I shudder just thinking about it.
You totally forgot about Christopher Pike books too! After about the first 10 they all seemed the same though, with the quiet but incredibly hot girl (who he always described as having big boobs - pervert) who fell in love with and screwed some dude only to find out he was responsible for all her missing friends and was, in fact, a murderer. Classic.
We played the Omen in the background of our Halloween party Saturday. Its my favorite holiday.
That's so funny. I read all those books and I still remember stories from Scary Stories... Remember the one that went something like "Don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by 'cause you will be the next to die"? I still stop laughing when there's a hearse around. I also love to be scared. My boyfriend is a big wuss... he won't watch scary movies with me!
Altho, my power bill is becoming scarier than anything I've seen on TV... it's October in Georgia and still 75 degrees!
suz, the velvet ribbon around the neck story was my favorite also. i still tend to bring it up in conversation way too often. don't know why that stuck with me so stickily...
ha! my fave "scary stories" story was The Wendigo! I tried to find a text version online of it but it is nowhere to be found. Wikipedia that shizz though. It is CREEPY!
