The other night, some friends and I were talking about cake.

And not just any cake, but birthday cakes of the 1980s....the kind of fabulous ice cream birthday cakes from Baskin Robbins or Carvel we used to have as kids.

You know when I was small, it wasn't like 'Hey mom, For my birthday cake this year I'd like a triple chocolate mousse cake heavy on the ganache!" It was more like "ME WANT COOKIE MONSTER" Or Strawberry Shortcake. Or Minnie Mouse. Or Ziggy.

That's right, folks. ZIGGY!

When I was 7 I thought Ziggy was THE SHIZZ. Either that or I had already used up all the cake ideas that held any real psyched-factor for me, so I said to my 6 soon to be 7 year old self

"What about Ziggy?"

Indeed!

I think this is what is missing from life these days. Ziggy cakes. And Pirate cakes and Pink Shoe-shaped cakes and maybe, for one lucky birthday girl somewhere, an Ari Fleischer cake.

And I don't mean for kids. I mean for US. (Quasi) Adults.

Someone get Baskin Robbins Cake Marketing Department on the phone, I have an idea called "adult birthday cakes*" I think they might be interested in hearing.

*No, not THAT kind of adult birthday cake.

I've had to make an Elmo and a Thomas the Tank Engine cake already - my nephew, and my daughter is requesting Magenta from Blue's Clues and a lizard cake for her birthday this year...AHH - how am I suppose to make a lizard? much less for my girlie girl? Can I make it pink and purple?
