Here is what I don't get

People who, while cruising around a lot looking for parking, see someone get into their car to leave, and so they stop and put their blinker on. Meanwhile, half of the parking lot is empty. Why do you need to sit and wait for MY space, and make me feel rushed throughout my just-entered-the-car ritual (find good station on radio, make sure air is blowing right on my face, pull down mirror, apply lip gloss, pull seat up, etc) when literally there are many, many spaces open about 2 or 3 cars away from me.

It ain't right. And just because I feel rushed...doesn't actually mean I am rushing FYI.

And what else I don't get is I was relaying this anecdote to my mother who then told me "Why do you care if he waits for your space?". And I was all "Mom, it's annoying. There were spaces all over the place". To which she then replied "Don't be so concerned about what other people are doing".

To which I replied "Hello? What the hell would I have to talk about all day if I wasn't concerned with what other people are doing?".

This is my Mom though, a woman who doesn't think it counts as gossip if you throw in the phrase "I'm concerned".

Example:

Me, gossiping: "I can't believe she wore white!"
My mother, not gossiping: "I can't believe she wore white! I'm CONCERNED."

It's a fine line.

lol 'm pretty sure MOST car-having americans hate walking. that's why around here it's considered "excercising" if you park further than 5 spaces away from your destination :-)

There was a study done some years ago that proved you take significantly longer to leave a parking space if there's someone waiting for it. It falls under the catagory of territorial behavior. Pretty interesting:

You mom rules... I'm totally stealing her "concerned" tactic to make myself feel less guilty about my own bad gossippig habits! ;-)

Here (Oklahoma) you can say whatever you want about someone as long as you add "Bless his/her heart". Oh, and I once saw a woman make her kid run over to a parking place and stand in it til she could circle around to pull in. It was December and freezing, but she got the spot!

I love your blog, but please keep in mind how dangerous it is for anyone [particularly women, though] to sit in the parked car in a parking lot or on the street. Apparently the crazies count on women taking a long time to get ready and get out of the space and they prey on that.

you are absolutely right! if i hadn't been in my work parking lot, with people milling all around anyway I would never have been fussing around like that! furthermore i am militant about locking my doors AS SOON as i get in the car, no matter where I am. I think every woman should at least do that.

I just adore your blog. No really, I read it every morning when I get to work. I totally think we'd be fast friends too, if we were to ever meet! I agree with 97% of things that you say and you crack me up! Keep up the good work. :)
