Judgment at Chauteauneuf
Never do I feel more judged than at the liquor store.
More specifically, the Suprette a few blocks away from my apartment that sells, in addition to mostly expired canned goods, an astonishingly great selection of wine and which I stop at frequently. Frequently meaning at least 2, 3 maybe 4 times a week. For a bottle of wine.
I know the smart thing would be to buy a bunch of bottles at once but that's too smart for me. So instead I pull into their tiny parking lot knowing that there are 1 of 2 scenarios about to greet me.
The old lady is working who is totally lovely and sweet and judges not yet lest she be judged.
Or the old man who casts withering glances as soon as I enter the store, and then knowingly looks at the refrigerated wine aisle, urging me there with his eyes, knowing I will be a-sauntering down there momentarily.
His look says to me"JEEZ This one again!" and I find myself indignantly shooting HIM a look that I feel says "At least I'm not here for the Arbor Mist!".
Judgement breeds judgement, no?
And perhaps the mature attitude would be "If I feel I am being judged for the frequency with which I purchase wine, maybe I need to consider how much wine I drink" but no instead my attitude is more "If I feel I am being judged for the frequency with which I purchase wine that old man needs to STFU".
Granted it is entirely possible that the man just LOOKS like that and I am just feeling paranoid because today the wine buyer was in and he mentioned that he can't believe how fast the Pomelo Sauvignon Blanc has been selling this month and that's pretty much my most frequent purchase this month.
Stimulating the economy, people! That's what it's all about.

LOL!
At least you're at home enjoying wine instead of working in a liquor store surrounded by them ;)
I'm at the store buying wine several times a week, too. You'd think given the discount my local store gives for buying 6 or more bottles I'd just buy a case, but no.
Ha. Arbor Mist! (my mom loves arbor mist. I have been known to secretly partake in the mist now and again!)
E I cannot hate. I have fond memories of the arbor mist sangria.
i completely understand the judging looks, i buy wine at least 3 or 4 times a week and always the old man-ish woman at the register gives me looks maybe telling me to enjoy some iced tea and lay off the wine. whatever i enjoy my wine and i enjoy it frequently. drink on sistah!
Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill, anyone? Anyone?
I'd just give them the wonk eye if they sit in judgement. You are helpin' out their store so they can just chill out :) And the good thing is you know your wine so if they have a good selection, keep frequenting.
Our store here - I have THREE wines I'm looking for and found NONE. I have to go to Total Wine which scares me because that place is Information.Overload. Eeehhhh...
I feel paranoid if I buy wine in the afternoon - especially on a work day. If I ever do get attitude, I'll say, "Working lunch."
