Hot to Handle

Me.
In The Emergency Room.
With a Frozen Chicken Cutlet.

No this is not a game of F*cked Up Clue. This was just a Tuesday night in the Adam and Sarah household.

I recently started using a nifty pan that can be used on both the stove top and in the oven (a novelty to me since all my pots and pans are for the stove top only and the only things that go in the oven are glassware + baking pans + the dutch oven). Last night I cooked a (fabulous, if I do say so myself) pork tenderloin by searing it on the stove over high heat and then baking it in the oven for another twenty minutes or so. When it came out of the oven it looked and smelled delicious. I donned my oven mitt and quickly plated the meat and covered to let it rest, then put the pot back on the stove and removed the oven mitt. Then, in a fit of maniacal (for me) neatness I grabbed the pot with my bare hand to bring it to the sink to be rinsed.

HOLY HELL.

As soon as my hands closed around the searing hot handle I screamed and dropped it and immediately ran cold water over the afflicted hand. Adam came running in "Are you ok?". I pulled my hand out from the cold water, and aside from looking red it seemed fine so I told him it would be all good. So I wrapped a cold compress around it and went about my night.

After a few hours ago, all was not well. It was hurting more as time went on and not the dull annoying pain I am accustomed to when burning myself (I cook a lot and use heated hair implements a lot: burns are not news to me). This was a searing, tearing pain that made me want to pull my hair out. So at around 11PM when Adam offered to take me to the emergency room I figured it couldn't hurt. Well, I mean it WAS hurting but it couldn't hurt more to have a professional look at what I did to myself.

This was my first experienced going to an ER for myself and I have to say, it was basically good times all around. We were seen immediately. The nurse who attended to me was awesome and, after determining I had inflicted a second degree burn on myself, gave me tons of supplies to take home (they couldn't dress it in the ER since I would not relinquish my grip on the frozen chicken cutlet I had brought with me) as well as a prescription for Percoset. I highly recommend, if one must go to the ER, go on a Tuesday evening.

So I arrived back home with some new jewelry

and the inability to sleep. So after a dozen or so Golden Girls episodes I was finally able to wrap my hand at around 6AM today and have an appointment with my doctor this afternoon to see what can be done about the giant bubble that has sprouted on my palm.

So let this be a lesson to you: Pots that can go from stove top to the oven should not be used by total doofi like myself.

Oh goodness...hope that heals up quickly! I've been burning myself in the kitchen a lot lately, but nothing serious yet. Good thing, too, because the next time I go to the ER they're going to look at me and say "good grief, WHAT NOW???"

Ouch?! That's horrible! But is that a Perdue Perfect Portion you're clutching ;)

Haha no it's actually chicken breast that Adam vacuum packed with our Food Saver. I love that thing! It makes any frozen meat into a leak proof cold compress. Good times.

I, too, am a big fan of the stovetop/oven hybrid pan and after a string of close calls, I finally learned to take my oven mitt, put it over the handle like I would over my hand, and leave it there (obviously this only works with the skillet which has a nice long handle). Only thing you have to watch for with this technique is catching the glove on fire, particularly with a gas stove (learned that one the hard way). Good times

Ahh anonymous that is an awesome idea. Thank you!!! Perhaps we won't only have sandwiches to eat for the rest of the week....

Oh girl. I have done this (not 2nd degree burns I don't think) too many times to handle whilst making mustard/maple pork tenderloin. To the point where I make a SIGN and post it above the stove that says THE POT IS HOT DUMB ASS (me not you!).

ouch, ouch, ouch. that hurts just reading about it... i have done similar, dumb things before but was lucky to not walk away with second degree burn from it.

i hope it'll get better soon.

Well Sarah, it's like you always say "A nice pan in burned flesh is worth two healthy hands in a shitty pan".

I guess now we know what it all means.

Ah yes, my favorite old adage.

I did the same thing once. Not quite ER bad, but the ice pack and I bonded for a few days.

I bought one of those silicon handle covers (http://www.cooking.com/products/shprodde.asp?SKU=532520) after the fact. You slide it on when you pull the pan out of the over. Its saved me from future burns of this nature. But I still tried to pick up the cookie sheer I had just pulled from the over bare handed the other day....

Hope your feeling better soon.

Oh no! I hope you're feeling better. :(

Burns are the worst because unlike other injuries, they do NOT gradually start feeling better after the initial "OW!" factor. They hurt like a bee.

Good lord, lady! I hope you feel a bit better today.

do not get me started to how many stiches i have needed from the ER while using the Wusthof knives

I think you alone could make that bandage trendy.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone!

And let me tell you, I gave myself a manicure and today I am wearing a huge cocktail ring on my burned hand. I am also on the hunt for a sassy fingerless lace glove. If one has to wear a large annoying bandage, one must make the most of it, oui?

Oh my goodness, burns are the worst. Hope it heals safely and quickly!

oh my gosh Sarah! Hope the hand heals up super fast - although that's awesome you gave yourself a manicure.
Thinking of you!

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your burn. Glad to know I'm not the only person who can grab a pan without thinking to put the oven mitt back on. It's not fun, but definitely a (hard) lesson learned. I hope you're feeling better! Liz

OMG! Just know that every domestic diva from Julia to Martha has had a 2nd degree burn at some point. You're just joining their illustrious ranks.
Hope your hand feels better!

OMG. I've done that before but certainly not to that severity of a burn. That's lousy.

Ouchy bloody ouchy - I did a mini-version of that last week with a grill pan rack and my poor index finger hurt like nothing on earth!

By the way, is that a Tiffany bracelet on your wrist? If so, I have the same set (which was bought in Boston!)

It sure is! I love my Tiff <3
