28 So Far

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for all the kind birthday wishes. I appreciate each of them and look forward to year 28 being as fab as year 27 was.

I celebrated last night with my parents and Adam at Wine Club where, as usual, we had a blast. We sampled delicious Australian wine with paired small plates. I discovered that, while in general I don't like mushrooms, I DO like shitake mushrooms. In moderation. Meaning like, one. The seating is family style which means we had strangers at our table for the beginning of the night but of course, as the wine flowed, strangers they no longer were.

At one point one of the guys was speaking fluent French to my mom (her first languages are French and Italian so she is All About It) and I had to ask him where he had become so fluent. When he told me he studied it at Bates I was all OMG YOU WENT TO BATES DO YOU KNOW XXXXX and he was like OMG I LOVE HER, SHE JUST MARRIED HAVE YOU MET HER HUSBAND HOW DO YOU KNOW HER and so on and then we took a picture of ourselves to send to XXXXX and freak her out. Then Adam said "This is so funny, it's like the time you took a picture of you and Kenny to send to Katie YYYYY" and the guy was like OMG YOU KNOW KATIE YYYYY I SUMMER WITH HER FAMILY AND HAVE KNOWN HER SISTER FOREVER" and so on. So another picture had to be taken to freak another friend out. 'Tis a small world indeed.

I had the day off from work today to attend to the business of being 28 which meant, primarily, the business of renewing my license. Which brought with it the most momentous of RMV experiences: a new license photo. Now, my old one ain't great. I am 21, wretchedly hungover and my hair looks like butt. So I was excited to have a (however mildly) more attractive photo taken. I posed. They snapped a pic. And I was asked "how do you like it" but the fact is I was so blinded by the flash that the photo looked like a big white spot to me. I blinked a few times and said "It's fine" and when it was printed it out, well, it wasn't as bad as it could have been but it wasn't that great either.

Uh.....

WTF indeed. I wish I could have that text on my actual license.

So for the next 9 years or so I will go through life with a license that depicts, instead of a hungover blearly face, an uruly phantom cowlick. A step up, I think, but not really what I was hoping for.

Here's hoping I can get it together for a better picture when I'm 37.

I wish my license photo were half as good as yours. My photo is so bad that people don't even always believe it is me!!

PPP- my previous license photo was that bad! I've even been asked for "backup ID" because people didn't really think it was me. I'm like HEY MY ONLY CRIME IS NOT BEING PHOTOGENIC :-P

OMG! Bates, like Bates College? Like where I work?

Or is there some other Bates that I'm not cool enough to know about and now I look like a total fool?

I think your photo looks quite nice. It is a small world. My hubby spent all summer at an Army school with this guy and found out after 16 weeks that the guy was our sister-in-law's twin sister's husband's cousin. Really!

You only have to renew your licence every 9 years??? Holy crap. We have to do it every 4 years. Lucky girl.
