An Ideal Lunch Menu

The other day at work, we got to talking about weird foods.

For one thing, there is a whole Mayonaise/Miracle Whip divide in my office. Those who perfer the Mayo cannot abide the other's tolerance for Miracle Whip and vice versa. In fact the whole debacle got started when a coworker asked me my favorite question that of course never annoys the shit out of me :"What's that you're eating?". I explained that I was eating this very hard to figure out sandwhich made of turkey, mayo, lettuce and tomato on wheat. She widened her eyes in horror.

"MAYO!? EWWWWWWW"

At which point surrounding coworkers lept to my MAYONAISE IS AWESOME defense.

And the conversation went from here. I learned that the following lunch item that I like is considered weird and/or gross.

Deviled ham + mustard sandwiches

My mom used to pack these in the cooler when we were little as our "beach lunch"! It has sentimental value for me, what can I say?

The following lunch item that my coworker Jane likes is considered gross by everyone but me.

Liverwurst.

And the following lunch item that my coworker Cathy likes is gross/weird to ME

Fried baloney sandwich on Wonderbread

Do not google image fried baloney.

And finally, the following lunch item that my coworker Randall likes is the grossest/weirdest of them all

HEADCHEESE

It's like edible particle board made of different meats, and not just any meat, but the meaty chunks from a calf or pig's head.

MEATY CHUNKS.

When I heard that, and we all vomited in our mouths a little, I had to say "Ohh suddenly a little deviled ham doesn't sound so bad, does it!?"

Ok Sarah you're aware that I adore you but reading any mention of headcheese this early in the morning just wrong! Any mention of headcheese ever is just wrong. Ick.

Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting! Then again I find most lunch meats to be a bit yucky - except for turkey which is my one true lunch love. I'm not a ham eater anymore but we used to have deviled ham growing up as our beach lunch too! All summer long - every day - deviled ham on the beach. Memories!

And I had to google. Blahg.

i don't feel bad for liking my tomato-mayo-salt-pepper sandwiches on sunbeam white bread now.
"headcheese", for real? i've never heard of that and it looks (and sounds) *disgusting*.

Natalie I LOVE tomato sandwiches!! I just love tomatoes in general. I will even cut one up, sprinkle some salt and pepper and eat it plain!

Good call on the google image warning... no images of actual fried baloney, but just about every other disgusting thing you can think of. Have you ever tried to make your own mayonnaise?

I give headcheese dirty looks when I am at the deli counter. That and olive loaf. Ewwww....

I guess it's the W. Mass in this gal, but I love liverwurst on rye with a bit of mustard, onion and swiss cheese. Too many times going to the deli in E. Longmeadow as a child I guess.

My friends down here just don't get it.

Mayo, Miracle Whip, they both make me gag!

I used to "gross" out my friends with my cream cheese and olive sandwiches. I was redeemed when Bruegger's opened in my town and started selling olive and pimento cream cheese.

I will admit, here only, that sometimes I get a craving for Vienna Sausages.

I can totally see the cream cheese + olive thing! I enjoy a nice bagel with cream cheese and capers every now and then! <3

OMG, headcheese?
Gross.

I am a Mayo girl and when I do have it - it's gotta be Hellmans. Everything else is too...salad dressing-ish, you know?

Unless...it's Lemonaise. :)

I always thought headcheese was located on a man's body, not in your grocery store...NAST! Okay, I have to say that fried bologna sandwich's are totally nostalgic to me. I vote for that.

I hadn't heard of it either! I had to google it to learn the truth about it's disgustingness.
