Getting Skintimate
I feel like a lot of people recently have blogged about skin health lately. As the weather gets warmer and we get out and about in the sun, it makes good sense to start talking about maintaining healthy skin and being sun-safe.
Of course I pick a shitty, rainy day to talk about it. But what can you do?
Skin Cancer weighs on all of our minds, or at least it should. I know many people who have been diagnosed including my own father and grandfather (both are fine!). I find myself second guessing everything that pops up on my face (charming, right) because of my predisposition, and because my Lebanese mother chose to give all her olive toned gorgeous skin genes to my brother and leave me with my dad's Scottish/Irish red freckledness. SWEET.
I'm not going to testify about it, we are all grownups and if you don't know by now that you should wear your sunscreen, then what can I say to change your mind? How about if you are one of these people email me and I will send you a picture of my dad after he had to use a chemical cream on his face that brings every precancerous cell you have to the surface of your skin. Then check back with me about whether having a suntan is worth it.
Moving on:
Let's say you know all you need to know but you want to do something more. Maybe you want to support skin cancer research, and it just so happens you are also in need of a facial. Well have I got a deal for you (if you are in the Boston area). The fabulous getsugar.com has launched a fundraiser with SkinHealth to raise money for skin cancer research at Mass General. SkinHealth has discounted two of their most popular services, and when you purchase either of these services through getsugar.com . SkinHealth and getsugar will donate $25 to the MGH Cancer Center. So ladies, you can get a facial for $48 or for those who need a little more bang for their buck can get a light peel (glycolic, lactic or pumpkin, they will work with you to see what is best for your skin) for a cool $70. And if you do, $25 of that money will go towards much needed research. So you can help out your own skin, while helping out other people's skin too.
Not a bad deal, oui? Fundraising + Facials = kind of a match made in heaven.

My mom was diagnosed with precancerous cells on her face last week and is now using the cream. It is already awful looking. So I apply sunscreen daily and tell all my friends about the dangers of tanning, all the time.
Oh no, poor mom!! I wish her a speedy recovery!
My first cousin was just diagnosed with melanoma on the back of his knee last week. Unfortunately, he waited a whole YEAR to go get the mole checked out.
Moral of the story: Don't forget to slather that sunscreen on the spots you can't see.
Darling, I just gave myself a birthday gift. I had gotten the getsugar email as well but didn't open it....and then I read your blog and VOILA. :)
once again Ulli, you are the WOMAN. love it. i will be treating myself as well!
that is a sweet deal! enjoy!
Here! Here! I can't do the Mass Gen thing but I can attest to the benefits of sunscreen and staying out of the sun. Thanks for spreading the word Sarah!
It is so important to stay out of the sun as much as possible as skin cancer is much more dangerous then people think....
Sorry about your Dad....cancer is a terrible, terrible thing. This was a great post... people forget because we all love looking so golden it makes us feel like we look, healthy. :)
I am ADDICTED to my sunless tanner. Not only do I look tan, but I feel less inclined to be in the sun because I already AM tan. :) So it works wonders psychologically as well.
Best product ever: SUN Sunless tanner by Sun Laboratories.
