Contra-band
The most exciting thing to happen to me this weekend was I finally got into headbands.
(Who am I, Cher Horowitz?
But still, it was a pretty exciting event!
(Who am I, Cher Horowitz?
Cher's Dad: "So, what'd you do in school today?"
Cher: "Well... I broke in my purple clogs!" )But still, it was a pretty exciting event!
First of all, the headband party is a party to which not only did I not RSVP but I scoffed at the invite. Headbands? How 80s! Next you will be telling me leggings are back.
Oh wait....
But I digress. I didn't get the whole headband movement. If we're being honest I should tell you this is partially because I have a huge head. There I said it. In fact, my head is so big that when I was a child and took horseback riding I had to wear an adult sized helmet. And big heads + decorative head pieces such as headbands do not pair very well in my mind.
That and I remember the headband-headaches of my youth. When the part that clasps behind your ears begins to bore a hole into your brain. And despite the precense of cute headbands pretty much everywhere you look, I decided No, Not For Me.
Then this past Sunday Jenny and I went to the Derby Street Shops for the afternoon and in Ann Taylor Loft, my resitance broke down. First of all, ever since I started going to Katie for my hair care and starting recieving hair cuts from someone who actually knows how to cut curly hair without making you look like this

I have been wearing my hair down a lot more, something I haven't done in a LONG time. And with that new habit comes a new annoyance; Hair In Your Face. So while Jenny was in the dressing room I casually threw on one of the headbands they had on display and lo, it was perfect!! Not only did it get my hair out of my face but it actually look, gasp, CUTE. And it didn't add to my big headedness in any way which pretty much sealed the deal for me. So I came home with these babies.

(My fave is the one with the little bow, though when I put it on Adam said "I like it...you look like that crazy chick in The Breakfast Club". Gee thanks!)
Anyway I have to say, I can't believe I waited this long to get in on this. They are CUTE. And really practical. But I have to wonder what is next? Will I write to you all next week telling you about my new love for lace trimmed leggings?
(Probably not! Though in elementary school I rocked a mustard and olive colored pair and was pretty sure I was the SHIZZ! )
But in any case, any tips for cute, non headache inducing, big head friendly headbands please send along to me!

Hi Sarah, I am a hairdresser from Lex, KY and love your blog! I couldn't resist this post about the hair. Being a hairdresser and having curly hair myself, I feel your pain. Glad you finally found someone that knows what they are doing. I have found headbands at wal-mart that curve back behind the ears so you never get the dig in headache. Thanks for putting a piece of yourself out there in blogger land.
Kathy
Okay, I am pretty much a headband expert given my proclivity towards big-haired-ness and The Frizz. I love these "perfect fit" headbands that you can pick up on Etsy - handmade, great quality, and super comfortable. Here's the link:

I also love any and all headbands by Lauren Nicole Fashions - just fantastic - so comfortable and pretty reasonably priced - and JCrew's headbands are surprisingly comfortable as well. Here's the link to Lauren Nicole:

I have purchased headbands from sites like Three Chickadees and Preppy Potato which while cute are highly headache inducing so I do not recommend. One girl's opinion, hope it helps!
Okay, so I got nothin' for you on headbands.
But a short time ago you wrote about a product that was super effective with the curly hair. My hair, strangely, is only recently curly and my cluelessness on how to deal with that has led me to continue wearing it straight. Today I tried the product you mentioned and voila! No frizz, cute curls. YAY!!
So yeah, thanks for that product review. :-)
I happen to be rocking a pretty large melon myself Sarah so I feel your pain on this issue. I am however a headband addict. I actually buy a lot of my headbands at H&M and JCrew. Those seem to fit the best for me. Target also has some pretty cute offerings but I can't say all of them are large head friendly.
I haven't taken the headband craze past my no slips in the gym to keep my bangs back but after having read your post I am inspired to try them out.
Yay!! Let me know how that works out. We can be headband converts together and...talk about headbads and stuff. :-P
Sarah, welcome to the club. I love headbands...starting to amass so many that it looks more like a pastime than a beauty thang. I get a ton at this place here in Texas. Lovely headbands and really lovely prices. Go to www.sammoon.com and then to the "hair" section. They have muchos of the "look, I'm wearing a scarf around my head...but oh wait, not really, it's just a headband with extra fabric!" headbands.
Looks like they don't have any of the plain fabric covered (sans faux-scarf tail) on there (that I love) but I would keep checking back!
In-store they have some pretty fab jewelry - don't know if they have as much on the site, but I love it for costume-y jewelry.
Happy wearing-your-hair-down days. Those days are sliding away for me as Houston gets steamy and disgusting and it's hair up all summer long. Ugh. Happy shopping.
I just jumped on the headband bandwagon too! I've found some cute ones at Target.
After reading this post I feel the need to stay up all night watching teen movies from the 80s and 90s. I actually own Clueless, on VHS no less!
I have some cute headbands from Lisgh over at Grosgrain Garage that terrif. I don't know if she sells them in her etsy shop but I'm sure she'd hook you up if you asked her. :)
I so love headbands but I have a high forehead and I just can't get used to them - I do wear my sunglasses as a headband though.
There is an amazing array of exquisitely beautiful headbands that are extremely comfortable available at www.andreasbeau.com.
p.s. amanda, is the stuff of which you speak Sunsilk Anti Pouf? Isn't it THE BOMB!?
I LOVE headbands. And the ones I have from AT LOFT are some of my favorites, they fit me PERFECT. I have a few from JCrew that are super comfortable, but I also have a few from there that are painful after a few hours. I think you just have to go out and buy them all to know. I have a big head and big hair- I have bought some that are too loose, they don't give me a headache, but aren't effective at holding back the hair, but then there are ones that are too tight and sqeeze my brain. Welcome to the headband club! Let us know which ones you find that you love!
Work Shout out to Katie!
Also, Urban Outfitters has some really cute ones lately- not sure on the headache factor.
Also, I have a coupke of catalogs here in the salon you can look at next time (work whole sale prices!)
<3 ya
