Up In My Grill

Grilling season is upon us.

Me, I am not much of a griller. I don't have the patience to stand over a grill and watch meat turn brown. I do, however, love the taste of grilled meat and the whole action of having some friends over, firing up the grill, cracking open some Sam Summers (or a few glasses of Chenin Blanc, as it were) is a really great nice weather tradition.

The thing is, when you live in an apartment building having a grill can be tricky. You can't very well start up a behemoth gas grill in an apartment kitchen....and most landlords (like mine) won't even let you have a grill outside. Something about fire hazards or, in our case, wanton bitchiness.

In any case, Adam loves to grill and I love to eat grilled food so this presented a problem. Should we deny ourselves a summertime tradition because of our living quarters? Should we suffer a less than stellar summer because our building is not grill-friendly?

The solution to our problem lay in one man's genius. That man is George Foreman. And that solution is the Indoor/Outdoor Grill.

Small enough to fit in the smallest of apartment kitchen, but still big enough to cook a boatload of meat (240 square inches of grilling surface to be exact). It is smokeless, and comes with a cover to speed up cooking times. The handles are always cool so you don't have to worry about burning yourself and, like a regular Foreman grill, the fat drains away in a center channel and into a removeable trough underneath the grill.

It has adugustable heat settings so you won't accidentally overcook your precious kabobs.

And in the end it is the perfect solution to the No Grill Apartment conundrum because there is no fire hazard with them, they don't smoke and they are super easy to clean (the grill top is removeable).

They also help to create a damn fine Porterhouse Steak

And even I, who hate grilling, can do this because you just throw the steak on, put the lid on and set the timer for 4 minutes. Then leave the room and watch Friends for a bit, then when the timer goes off you come back in the kitchen, flip them, put the cover back on and set the timer for 4 more minutes.

And in the end you have delicious, grilled and gorgeous steak

Mmmmmmmm.

Okay, it's just past 9:00 AM and suddenly I'm thinking, "forget a second cup of coffee, what I really want is a nice porterhouse!"

What time are you grilling tonight? If I get in my car right now, I should be there in time for dinner.

I didn't know you could use that IN the kitchen. We're not allowed to have grills in our apartment complex(and, after yesterday's fire, I can see why), but this warrents further investigation...

OMG...I have to find that grill and buy it...I wonder where it might be here in Vancouver, Canada! It looks like a fantastic investment for apt. living esp. when one doesn't have a balcony. Yup...my place kind of sucks that way.

Thanks Sarah!!!!
