Strength in Numbers

Yesterday afternoon my grandmother passed away.

I've tried to write this entry a dozen times and I can't make the words worthy of who my grandma was. A wonderful mother. A fantastic grandmother. A good friend. An amazing woman. It all sounds trite in the face of describing a woman who has meant so much to so many people, and most importantly to my family.

I guess a testament to who she was lies in the wonderful children she and my grandpa raised. All weekend long, from the moment she was rushed to the emergency room Saturday morning to the moment she passed yesterday, her nine children and their spouses and as many of us grandkids that could get there held vigil on the third floor of South Shore Hospital. For as many tears as there were there was laughter too, and bittersweet memories mixed with jokes and anecdotes as everyone crowded into her tiny hospital room that for those three days felt like the most important room in the world.

And over those few days, to see the enourmous emotional strength of my aunts and uncles, of my own father warmed my heart and made me feel so lucky, in spite of all the sadness. This is what I come from, these incredible people are a part of me.

And it brings me comfort, and I hope others in my family too, that she passed in a way that we should all hope to go, with her loved ones surrounding her.

I love you Grandma.

I am so so so sorry to hear about your loss. My own grandmother just passed away in March, so I entirely empathize. Though it doesn't necessarily get any easier, your tribute to her is beautiful and a lovely way to cherish her memory. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Very, very sorry for your loss. I went through the same thing just a week and a half ago, and I still don't have the right words to say. You said it perfectly, though: it's explained best with no words at all...a smile, the vast love you all felt and feel for her, the support your family had for one another, of which was instilled by her and will continue to be a tradition for many generations to come.

May you find peace during this time in recalling all the wonderful memories you shared with her.

I am so very sorry for your loss.... Grandparents are really magical parts of our lives. Sounds corny, but it's true. There's nothing like them.

Thanks for sharing your sadness with us, it's a great post.

How wonderful that you had a grandma in your life as an adult - I never had that, but my husband does, and it really is so special. I am keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers this week. <3

I'm really sorry for your loss, Sarah. What a beautiful tribute to your grandmother.

I lost my maternal grandmother five years ago, and I just recently unearthed some old papers, one of which was the euology I wrote for her funeral.

I still miss her terribly, but I often have the sense, corny as it may be, that she is with me and getting pleasure out of seeing me live my life, raise my son, etc.

You'll be in my thoughts.

I'm sure I'm like the 35th person to say this, but sorry to hear about your grandma, Sarah! Two of my three living g-parents are in the hospital right now, so I might be in your boat sometime this year. :(
