Lahey is for Lovers

Yesterday was a good day.

I arrived at the hospital around 10:30, just as the physical therapist was getting started introducing Adam to his best friend for the next few months, a pair of crutches. He managed to get out of bed and into a chair and stayed there, relaxing, for a few hours and with minimal assistance he was able to get out of the chair and back into bed. He is back on eating regular foods (since the hospital is next to The Border Cafe, I told him we could swing by there on the way home for takeout if he gets discharged today.

The only dark spot has been his Apnea, which I am starting to think maybe he has just always had. As of Thursday everning, he had not slept AT ALL since being admitted on Tuesday night because every time he dozed off his Apnea alarm went off, alerting everyone that his oxygen saturation had dropped to below 95 meaning his breathing was tapering off. But I happen to know that his sleep breathing has always been very slow and very deep..so much so that several seconds lapse between breaths. And we are pretty sure this is what the Apnea maching is picking up. Of course since all the morphine he has taken depresses the respiratory system, they don't want to take him off of the machine just in case there really is something wrong. However he did a ton of breating excercises yesterday by the time I left abou 9PM last night he looked like he was about to doze off. And this morning when I spoke to him he said he had managed to get about three hours of sleep last night which is good news!

His foot continues to bother him a whole lot, as can be expected, which worries me a bit in that he is having trouble managing the pain in a hospital, in a super comfy bed with a morphine drip so I cant expect the adjustment to being on the couch in our living room and popping oxycodone will be any better. But the nurse tells me that some people actually respond better to taking pills orally because they last longer than the morphine administered by the drip.

I am not sure if he is being discharged today. He had a catscan last night to check out how many bone fragments are still floating around in there and assess what should be done. He told me the orthopedic team met with him this morning , changed his ace bandage and fiddled with the external fixator a bit so it feels better than it did. I am going to ask the doctor about getting a visiting nurse to come by maybe twice next week just to make sure his wounds are okay. I mean the steel rods are literally sticking into his heel,foot and shin bones and out of his skin so they are clearly very bloody, and let me tell you when the doctor tells you "a decent amount of oozing is to be expected" that is not good times. My mother, who is a nurse, unfortunately left for France with my dad YESTERDAY for five weeks which sucked because it would have been nice to have her on call to come by and check things out. Don't think I didn't guilt her about this. But she gave me the contact info for her friend and fellow nurse Betty so if I have any questions or concerns I will call her. Especially when it comes to all the "ooze".

All in all, Adam is doing great. He is in good spirits, cracking jokes and is his normal good natured self which continues to amaze me because I would be a bitch on wheels if I was dealing with half of what he is dealing with. He rocks.

Thanks for all the continued well wishes. I am going to post some pics later on. If your lucky, maybe even a pic of the OOZE.

I hope he will be better soon. So is he having another surgery though?

I have my Primary Care Physician and such at Lahey in burlington and have always been very impressed with them..I hope this continues to be a good experience...through a shitty time.

Oh Sarah! I'm a dedicated reader (and occasional commenter) from Oklahoma. I haven't stopped by in a few days, so I read all of this at once. You guys are in my thoughts, hopefully he will get to come home today. My husband has sleep apnea too, when he had surgery, they put him on one of those monitors. It was horrible. I'm sure when you get Adam home he will get some decent sleep, and that will help SO much. Good luck with the ooze!

Sarah - I am so glad to hear Adam is on the end - the apnea is definitely exacerbated by the depression of the nervous system and hopefully that will improve, however, it's good to follow up on (esp. as he will probably have pain meds take at home)

I hope you do get a nurse as it would be so benneficial - too bad your Mom just left! Adam is very fortunate to have you - kep up the amazing job of being there for him and we'll keep on being here for you!

My dad has sleep apnea. He was held for observation at a sleep clinic to get diagnosed. He had his tonsils removed and that little dangle-ball in the back of your throat. (I thought you needed that, but whatever.) Also, he got this WW2 looking gas-mask apperatus hooked up to a tank that he's supposed to sleep with on his face. I think that proved near-impossible, so I don't know how often he uses it anymore. Poor guy. Good luck getting Adam home. And if I live the rest of my life without seeing his "ooze", I would not think of it as a loss. (o;
