Since it is Monday morning and horrible out, it's time to be irritable!

I think that in general , a person's name is pretty straightforward: you have a first name and a last name and sometimes a middle name. You probably go by your first name, or in some cases either your first AND middle name or just your middle name. And maybe your friends call you just by your last name. Any of these are fine with me.

Here is what is not fine:

1) When you go by a name that is not any of your given names. Such as "Hey my name is Joan Mary Smith but I prefer to go by Carrie". Um, it doesn't work that way. My name is Sarah and sure I would love to pick a name out of the air and assign it to myself rather than live in a world where every person I meet either is a Sarah, is good friends with a Sarah or is related to a Sarah. But this is not how the world works. You have a name, use it. Or else JUST go by the fake name. First thing on a Monday morning is not the time to saddle me with "real" and "chosen" editions of your name to remember.

2)"Hey my name is Carol but my friends call me KiKi". Uh, we just met and are not what you would say "friends" yet. Maybe if we ever had a conversation that lasted more than 5 seconds we could get into the whole "My friends call me". Maybe I will tell you my friends call me "Slutfacory". But it's not something we need to get into the first time we ever speak. Not to mention I will probably never feel comfortable calling you "KiKi" since that was my cousin's word for "vagina' when she was little.

3)When people who are your work equals say they "really prefer to go my "Mr Smith"" instead of Joe or whatever their first name is. No one needs to be that pretentious. Yes I am young and you are old, but we have the same position at work and asking me to address you as "Mr" all the time doesn't mean I respect you more, it just means when I describe you to my non-work friends I will call you "Mr. Douche" instead of just "Douche".

I had a parent of a student refer to me by my first name (in front of her child) and then sign something "Mrs. ____." So I started referring to myself as Miss E until she got the picture. Sign your next office memo to Mr. Douche "Ms. St..." And tell Kiki that although your name is Sarah, you'd prefer to go by Princess. :)

Whenever he is around other people, I pointedly address them as MISTER and MIZZZ but he never gets that I am making fun of him. He thinks I am just really polite. Little does he know....

Oh I cannot stand it when people introduce themselves to me as Mr. - Are you kidding, I got a call at work the other day, the person was all this is Ms. _____, I blatently asked them for their first name and only call them by that. Its in my top 10 pet peeves.
I also dont like when people who you just meet start calling you by a nickname. My name is Suzanne, I introduced myself as Suzanne, why you decided "Suzie" is what I would like to be referred to as is beyond me.

haha, I always wished I could get away with "it's Jeanne, but most guys call me Shauna". I love Ferris Bueller!

Well, Sandra is a very common name in Germany [at least around the time when I was born], so there were three Sandra's in my class. In highschool there even was a Sandra with the same last name. It was terrible ;)

But I totally agree with you about the above said.

Do people really call you Slutfactory? Because that's kind of cool.

Nice to see you and I are still kicking some NaBloPoMo ass.

At my work I have a friend who calls me PP (long story, and not that interesting). We were hired at our new job together after being laid off at the previous one. From day one she called me PP in front of people. Mind you everyone respected the fact that it was HER nickname for me so they all called me by my name, Shanna. Except one person, I will call Snuffy... Snuffy calls me PP on occasion and let me tell you, I want to rip their throat out when they do that! '
Dude, SO not your place to call me PP!

chris: my friend jill and i call each other slutfactory. also "slutmachine" is a fave. any insult can be made better with the addition of "-factory" or "-machine" at the end.

shannox: TOTALLY irritating. one of my coworkers calls me Polka Dot, because I wear a polka dot dress in the summer. its lame but when he says it its endearing. anyone else? maddening!!!!

That reminds me of some non American classmates in Hawaii, who chose to pick US names.....like Cookie.....just most names were a little "stripper-esque"....their given names were often so beautiful and it woould have really taught everyone more about their language and culture had they chosen to use them. :(

My former boss tries to call me by my full name, no matter how many times I say that the only people that call me that is my mother or someone who doesn't really know me.

For the record - my full name, Allyson, is not something I really prefer. I've gone by either Aly or Lys for 20+ years. However, when using the term Aly, co-workers have been known to use the term Aly Cat which warrants a look of hell. That was my grandfather's nickname for me. Oh well - just another excuse for me to sigh, roll my eyes and run for coffee...

SlutFactory?? *LOL* That's a first....
