I always feel awful when I forget a birthday.
Especially the birthday of someone important to me.
And so allow me to say a very happy birthday to someone (or rather, something) that is important to me, and indeed important to all of us
The Cocktail!
Yes, the cocktail turned 200 years old yesterday, and is still as classically fabulous as ever.
It has been a long and sordid history with me and the cocktial. I dabbled with vodka tonics in my pre-21 days. I have, on my fridge, a picture of me and one Miss Jenny on my 21st birthday, celebrating with my first legal cocktail: The dry Tanqueray martini with 3 olives. I have since switched to dirty martinis of the same kind, since the dry variety causes me to leak gin out of my pores the following day. In any case, the gin martini is MY cocktail of choice and I will celebrate it and every other cocktail's special day (a day late) with a toast tonight.
So what's your favorite cocktail? If it involves gin you get to be in my special club. The "Waking Up Still Drunk at 7AM Because Gin takes So Long To Process" club.
Good times.

Oh gin is my favroite of favorites! In the summer, obviously there is nothing as relaxing as the G&T; if I'm at a bar that wont screw it up I'll go with a Tom Collins and towards the end of the night when I need a sweet burst its gin and grapefruit juice (plus I love feeling like Snoop). Once Labor Day passes us by, it's dirty gin martini time. People always think gin is so hardcore which is part of the reason I drink it, but I truly enjoy its slight "pine" aroma and the fact that I'm pretty much drinking grain alcohol distilled through juniper berries. I googled the "history of gin" it makes for excellent party conversation. Cheers!
G&Ts = classic summer cocktail for me too. or if i am at a questionable bar because i know its pretty tough to screw up!
Have you tried Plymouth Gin? I never was a gin person, but if you mix Plymouth, triple sec and cranberry juice together (I know, it's an alterna-cosmo) it's absolutely fabulous.
I'm a convert.
yes! i was at a bar that was doing a Plymouth promotion and tried some in a martini AND (weirdly enough) in a margarita. it was great! i don't see it around as much as I do Tanqueray and Sapphire though...
Do margaritas count as a cocktail? I know they're not as chic to be holding in a "lounge" as a fill-in-the-blank-tini, but they're soooo yummy!!! On the rocks, with salt. NOT FROZEN!!! Ick. LOL.
i love cocktails too!!!! i have so many that i love but right now i have been regularly drinking captain and diet. boring maybe, but diet-friendly--only one point (assuming there's only one shot in there)!
oh my god, just the smell of gin turns my stomach. why? because that's the first booze on which i got roaring drunk. straight gin, at 15 - smart idea!
and doesn't it just seem like you're drinking a christmas tree?? :)
i like the vodka tonic for the simple and hard-to-screw-up reasons (though i have had some screwn up, for sure). i also liike a mojito or margarita in the summer - oh who am i kidding, i like them anytime. i just had a margarita three nights ago :)
as you know, i'm a cape coder girl through and through, but i wanted to remind you of the time we drank free gin at beantown. we were both so drunk, it was fantastic. <3 danielle
Ka-Rista: love mojitos, although I've never attempted to make them myself (i had an unfortunate incident muddling mint leaves for Juleps this past Derby and won't be tryng that again) but they are delicious and I often pick cuban resturants when going out with friends as an excuse to drink them!
OOOOOO HOW FABULOUS! Rasberry Stoli vodka gimlet straight up with a twist, please :)
MINT JULEPS! i want one so bad. i tried to make them myself once at home and it was basically bourboun with some mint leaves in it.
MOJITOS = of course. love them. i make a mean one, too.
and danielle: we were ALREADY pretty drunk and then the cocktail lady is like "would you like to have some free gin drinks!?" best thing to say to already tips peeps ever.
oh and irish, my friend Andy is getting me turned onto gimlets. VERY nice.
I love Bloody Marys! Also, margaritas (rocks w/salt) and Jack and Coke on occasion. I have never had a martini! I love olives though, so maybe I should try one (vodka, not gin).
I also love to drink me some beer.
I'm a longtime fan of the girliest drink there is - the appletini. My recent faves are Ciroc (a fancy French vodka made from grapes) and Tonic or Stoli Raspberry and Soda. I'm such a fan of Stoli I named my cat Stoli!
a bloody marys are my fave breakfast beverage! frig mimosas.
oh and here is a conundrum: old man liquoe like gin suits me fine but girly drinks like an appletini gives me the worst heartburn EVER. does this mean i am getting old?
I have tried gin on NUMEROUS occasions but in the end I can't help but cringe at the fact that it tastes like my grandma's hand lotion smells... like a tree.
I prefer nothing froo-froo or fancy-pants. All my cocktails, 99% of the time, simply contain vodka and a single mixer. Thanks to Erinire I like the simple vodka and soda water bestest.
i vote maker's mark manhattan.
whiskey is my lover.
I'm more of a Egyptian Martini gal, but if I have a bartender that can't understand "Chambord, Absolut and a touch of triple sec", I'll go with the mainstain cosmo or Captain and Diet Coke. However, Sarah - your recipe for SoCo & Ginger Ale has gotten me into trouble lately *LOL*
Glad to know the cocktail is a scorpio - explains why it has such a bite ;)
I meant Mainstay!! not Mainstain *LMAO* Yeah - too many cocktails last night I think...
Ohhh...Tanqueray and tonic all the way! I love them. And totally agree with the "wake up at 7 AM still drunk" sentiment. My new temporary favorite is Phillips Union Vanilla Whiskey and Dr. Pepper. Delicious and sooooo smooooooth. :-)
