This morning I was in the break room, measuring out my cup of Special K and my 1/2 cup of skim milk when a coworker walked in. She looked at my measuring cups and breakfast and said to me "Weight Watchers?" and I smiled and nodded. She pointed at herself and said "Me too. I lost 37 lbs!"

Now that's what I'm talking about!

Yes, it is true, I have joined Weight Watchers. I've always been on a kind of halfassed quest to lose a little weight and since I have so many friends and family who have benefited SO much from it, and raved about it, I went to my first meeting yesterday and am officially On The Plan.

I was a little nervous about the meeting...I had visions of having to stand up and state my weight "Hi my name is Sarah, and I weigh...". Oh Hell No. But it turns out to be pretty much the opposite of that. I went in early to register and was weighed and given a load of reading material, as well as my Points Minder (a little device that helps you figure out how many points are in foods based on calories, dietary fiber and fat). I settled in and read through everything while I waited for the meeting to start. As I was reading, I kept noticing the people coming in and I was shocked. More than half of them were my age or younger, and most of them were not what you would describe as overweight at ALL. It was nice to see such a balance..some people are in it to lose 10 lbs, and some are in to lose 100 lbs. Either way we are all in the same boat.

Once the meeting got started it was actually a lot of fun. Lots of talk about what works and what doesn't work, lots of commiserating, and so many people were talking about how they lost 10, 20, 30 even 50 lbs doing Weight Watchers. And I know this, Adam's sister in law started in January and this year so far has lost almost 50 lbs. You can read all the material in the world but when you see person after person who has done it successfully you can't help but be motivated.

So, to be frank, it's fuckin' on. I have a goal of losing 27 lbs by my 27th birthday next February. Ultimately I will lose more than that eventually but that is my short term goal. And I'm not going to come on here every day and be all "woo hoo I lost 2 lbs!" or "I gained 1 lb, wah!" because I am trying to be big picture about it (and also that would be kind of boring, oui?)

And I'm not doing it for anyone else. I don't care what anyone thinks about how I look because no matter what I know I Look Good. It's not about vanity. It's a test, you see.

I'm doing it for me, to see if I can.

Kind of like when I went vegetarian for 2 years just to see if I could do it. And that meant giving up CHICKEN. This won't be nearly as hard. Really, it's cake

(It's not really cake, that shit is 12 points)

Loads of my friends have done Weight Watchers too. Emily is still doing it, I think. It's not just for our mothers' generation anymore, apparently. (My mom lost a ton of weight in the 80's. My memories of Weight Watchers and Richard Simmons are hopelessly tangled).
I could certainly stand to lose 5-10 pounds, but something keeps me from joining...maybe because I think they'd laugh my 10 pound goal right out of there.
It's funny because I just saw new pictures of Beth & commented on how great she looks.
I just pray this doesn't make your I Cook Good blog die an untimely death.
Check out Shape magazine for loads of really yummy un-boring healthy recipes. For example, this was my dinner last night:

thanks so much ladies! your support makes me psyched.

Nicky: I Cook Good will never die! As it is, I get about 1/3 of those recipes from Cooking Light magazine. I will be checking out the ones you sent too, thanks so much!

And Erin, the meetings are so great. Granted, i have only been to one but I felt (and still feel) really like i can kick some fat ass afterwards.

Did you go in Quincy? I go to the 5:15 on Wednesdays -- Tanya is AWESOME! She was on vacation yesterday and will be back next week. Wednesdays in Quincy are fun meetings - and she's great with figuring out points for alcohol! ha! Good luck. :)

Good Luck Sarah. I have been doing sort of a half assed ww\south beach for the past month. I check out the message boards on ww.com and they are motivational. I am on a quest to lose 26lbs by my wedding next November. I am hoping for almost all of it to be gone by feb or so in time to try on dresses.

nice, so we are basically aiming for the same goal at the same time! woot!

good for you - my internet friend boozie did WW and lost like, an insane amount of weight.

And that's too funny about the vegetarian thing! I went veg for 2 years as well, for no real reason other than to see if I could.

yay ww!! i am a strong believer and am currently down 17 lbs over 20 weeks. are you doing the monthly payment plan? it's $39 per month for as many meetings as you want to go to, but you also get access to etools which rules... you get access to the message boards and old recipes, you can figure out pts with a calculator, look up pts and activity values, and keep track of your pts. i like it.

i joined ww originally with a similar attitude... i didn't hate my body but i felt like i could be healthier if i was a bit more aware of what i was putting in it. turns out the diet is easy, healthy and effective, and even when i've had lapses, i have so much more knowledge about nutrition and healthy eating. good luck and keep us updated!

Self-improvement is a wonderful thing and I wish you all the luck in the world with this endeavour! Its about lifestyle changes, not dieting!! I can't wait to see a pic of the new svelte (what a good word, it just oozes sexiness) you in February!

oh girl i KNOW. my friend Lys sent me a link to this site that lists restaurants/coffee houses etc and the food they serve and how many points are in each dish. Let me just say when I read the Dunkin Donuts page? i cried a little. it is a damn shame too because that shizz is GOOD.

I had a friend who lost 50 pounds from WW, and still goes to meetings to this day, even though she's now a size 2/4. She gets the stink-eye a lot because she looks like she shouldn't be there, but she's so completely supportive of the program that she'd never quit just because she lost the weight. I know it works, and have been thinking about maybe doing it for these 15 pounds I've put on in the past 10 months...you just might have motivated me! Thanks!

And good luck...I know you'll do great!

Sarah said...

hell yeah! i am all about supporting other WW girls too. We can all meet for cocktails to celebrate meeting our goals!

Sarah said...

hahaha most cocktails are 2 points! <3

hmm... I am almost tempted to look into this WW thing... I mean, I am chubby and would be much healthier to lose at least 10-20 lbs. If I wanted to get to an ideal weight that would involve losing 40 lbs and for me that is rather a seemingly impossible feat. I have no self discipline to save my life.

you go, girl!
my mom lost about 25 lbs with weight watchers... awesome!

Sarah, Cooking Light ROCKS. I was going to rec. it to you in m first comment.....but I forgot, and I am happy to see that I don't need to anyway!!! Caitlin

Sarah said...

kim, most cocktails do! 2 points is a shot glass full of gin or vodka or whatever and tonic water has no points so a gin & tonic or a vodka tonic only has 2 points. these are primarily the cocktails i drink. martinis may have more, depending on what in is them. and 4 oz of wine DOES only have 2 pts. i promise. its all about moderation.

Wow, kickass! Going to a group must be so amazingly motivating! Here in Tokyo, land of tiny people, there are no WW and worse-- basically no clothing larger than a size 4/6. Oh and loads of fried food. WTF??
