I started feeling restless last month.
I knew I needed a change, but did I have the guts to go through with it? Maybe what I had wasn't the greatest, but it was what I was used to, what I thought suited me and my life.
But over the last few weeks I have taken a long hard look, and with bated breath decided to take the plunge...
....and dye my hair!
Andy works at a salon on Newbury called The Loft and had reccomended it HIGHLY to me so I abandoned Dellaria, where I have been going for 4 years, and decided if I was going to do somthing different well then I needed someone different, in a different place, to do it with. So he booked me with his favorite stylist, Sarah, and early on Saturday morning I picked up Andy at his home and we drove into the city.
I took it as a fortuitous sign that 1) it was absolutely gorgeous out and 2) I got street parking one block away from the salon.
Now I tend to always have grandiose ideas about my hair PRE-salon appointment and then I kind of poon out when push comes to shove. First I want super dark hair, then in the car ride over I think I should stick with auburn, then by the time I talk to the stylist I am basically lilke "How about just trim off 1/4 inch?".
Not that I am not adventurous. I have been every hair color from blonde to jet black. Just lately, I have been stuck in kind of a rut. Highlights in the summer, auburn in the winter and back and forth (and back, back, forth and forth)
It was getting old.
And I said as much to Sarah when we had the pre-appointment consultation. She had a bunch of questions for me: what I liked about my hair, what I didn't like, what I wanted my hair to say about me, what my favorite products were. At first I felt kind of on the spot but I was GLAD she asked me all these questions because then when the gloves came on and the dye was mixed, we were all on the same page.
And let me just say that I ALWAYS feel more comfortable when someone with thick/curly hair does my hair. I am not prejudiced against straighties, but no one can TRULY appreciate what I have to go through every morning unless they too can't leave the house with at least 2 products in their hair and a couple of emergency clips for backup. And Sarah knew what was up.
And so for once I didn't poon out and when we discussed color, I stuck to the plan and said DARK BROWN. And not warm brown either but cool, cocoa brown.
She was totally on board.
And so began the best salon experience of my life. She did a few color depositing shampoos before we began to blot out my highlights, and a pre-color conditioning treatment, and then while I was being dyed I wasn't stuck under a helmet hair dryer for 1/2 hour, but was given a self heating cap and free to wander around the salon, chatting with Andy, perusing through a Helmut Lang photo book, sipping some fresh coffee.
And she knew exactly what to do with my hair when it came time to snip, so that it wasn't shorter, just less volumous. And that girl gave me the quickest, straightest blow out I have ever had. And I have had MANY a blow out in my day.
She sent me home with an arsenal of products to help me maintain (and it wasn't like they were pushed on me at all. throughout the hair-doing process she was using product and telling me exactly what it was and what it does and in the end I was hooked) as well as a new, darker as I have ever been in recent memory, do.
The before pic is a month old, but you get the idea!
I am psyched. I feel like a new girl!
And I cannot reccomend The Loft Salon & Day Spa enough. Everyone there is so nice (including the hot male- receptionist), they really take care of you, use excellent products and take their time to make sure the client is super happy. I already booked another appointment in November for a cut and facial and am trying to sell my mother on the idea of a Day of Beauty.
Oh and speaking of beauty, Coco Grace has her own station there and is available from time to time for makeup consults. Word on the street is that she will be booking one hour consults all day long for the last few days of September.
So if you want to change your look, or even just want a trim and maybe some good advice then give them a call for prices/to book.

Love the new look!!
I was finally able to get my hair back to my natural color just recently...now I'm a little jealous of your fun, new look!
thanks girl!
darker is truly flattering
darker is always best
i plan on trying to go even darker
but i have to pay my mortgage first and then
here we go!
yay for new hair!
i am definitely beginning to see that. i have always looked like my mom (who is lebanese) but had my dad's irish coloring so i had a feeling the dark would work out since it looks good on my mom!
it is a lot of maintenance though since it will begin to fade within a month. i think its worth it though!
OMG!!! You look fabulous! That is a great color choice. My brother owns a spa/salon in AZ, and he couldn't have done it better.
i LOVE it! it's a beautiful, rich color. what would you call that color, exactly? i have medium brown hair and am in need of a little kick....
i'm so jealous of yours! :)
thanks!! i told her i wanted a deep, rich brown with cool highlights, not warm. my hair always ends up turning red no matter what color so i really needed a lot of deep cool brown to even that out. she also gave me some color depositing shampoo in "cocoa bean" to use if my blonde/red highlights start showing through.
I wrote down the address. I am sure I have passed by the place last year when I was strolling along Newbury street... I should have got an appointment right then and there *lol* I really like what Sarah did to your hair... great job :)
you look so pretty! i love the dark look on you! <3 danielle
YES DEFINITELY! we can probably get the services comped as well.
now you have even MORE motivation to come!
Hair looks great, Sarah! Did you & Jenny plan to dye your hair on the same weekend? Crazy!
i think jenny actually got hers done last week. 'tis the season, though! i know 3 other people who dyed there hair this week/weekend.
I've only dyed my hair twice in my life - once when I was about 15 and dyed it KoolAid blue (because that was the thing to do) and once when I was around 20 and dyed it red. I liked it red, but it didn't seem quite . . . me.
yeah thats how i felt about being blonde. i liked the idea of it...but it was not for me. i am a cheap, tarty-looking blonde!
Love it. Very autumnal.
Looks AMAZING!!!
I guess I'm going to have to put that place on my "whirlwind home visit" tour in a couple months.. Orlando SUCKS when it comes to hairstylists. Methinks change is a coming...
thank you ladies!
lys when are you coming here? when you do we should do cocktails and manis on newbury!
I love you. There is no one else in the world I would rather sing Dinah shore with.
Thanks for pimping out my work!
I found those french pots you love at TJ Maxx for $80!! Check it out!
Erin
thanks girl!! i have seen them there, too...but never QUITE what i am looking for. the only ones i ever see there are blue and i am holding out for red or yellow! :-)
