it has always worked a certain way with me, with formal events:

if i have purchased a dress weeks in advance, i will not be able to find a date until the last minute.

conversely: if i have a date ready.willing and able to accompany me, i will not find a dress until the very last minute, IF i even find a dress at all.

and since I have been with Adam for two years and thus have a built-in date to all formal events, I have had a bitch of a time finding a dress these days.

(and no, i cannot wear something i already own unless i am absolutely desperate!)

and so here we are, three days before my good friend Jeanne's wedding as there is nary a dress in sight for me. every formal dress I own has seen at least one wedding and one other kind of formal dinner and for my first hometown friend's wedding it would be nice to have something special, that does not reek of the cedar balls i have hanging in my closet.

it's crunch time people! tonight i am heading to the South Shore Plaza to hit up Macys and Lord and Taylor and Banana Republic and Filene's. if i have no luck there, which if past experience means anything i WILL, then tomorrow after work I am off to Bloomingdales and whatever else the Chestnut Hill Mall has to offer.

if that fails, then i will have to break out the emergency plan titled: Operation Saks which is only to be used in circumstances where all else fails because my wallet really suffers when I walk into that store. it's a Last Resort Measure. and since I have Friday off (so I can go to Logan and pick up the fabulous Megs who is flying in from LA for the wedding), perhaps that will be a fun afternoon project for us?

and if you doubt my seriousness in anyway: i brought my old-lady cushioned black clogs* to change into before my shopping excursion tonight. so you KNOW i mean business!

(*i could have brought sneakers, but i have black hose on and while i enjoyed watching Melanie Griffiths in "Working Girl", i have no desire to conjure the image of her with my apparel)

Wow, I know exactly how you feel. My problem is that I always have in my head what I am going to wear to said event, and when the day comes for me to get dressed, it just looks uber-horrible on me and I have a severe outfit crisis up until I have to leave.

I get all sweaty, my hair gets frizzy, hoards of clothing get flung around the room, I change my underwear like seven times because certain underwear doesn't work with certain outfits, I struggle to get pantyhose on only to rip them with my toe nail and have to change them, then decide I don't even want to wear stupid pantyhose once I finally get the second pair on. Then, I finally find an outfit that I am happy with, and it's on to the shoes. I never end up having time to finish doing all my make-up, so my husband has to drive and I do it frantically in the car.

Argh. I'm exhausted just thinking about it all.

I do the same thing. Buy a new dress for every wedding. My husband does not think its funny that the checkbook takes a hit each time and every week before a wedding i do the same thing which reminds me....I have a wedding to attend this weekend and i have not a clue what to wear. So i might do the mall scrambling thing too!
You will find something fabulous!

I am all for more shopping! Do you want to get our nails done Friday or should I get mine done here on Thurs? I actually have the opposite problem - I went shopping ALL last weekend (literally, 10-8 Sat and 12-5 Sun). The crazy part is I bought the perfect dress over the summer - this was just the cardigan/accessory shopping. Anyway I've ended up with 3 possible outfits and am having trouble deciding... I will email you, I need help.

I say Lord and Taylor is your best bet. I was just dress shopping and there seems to be a shortage of dresses unless you want to wear something plain and black. L&T always come through for me! Good luck!
