Happy Valentine's Day

February 14th is important not just because it is a mere 11 days from my birthday, but because it is an opportunity to wear red and pink to work, go out for red and pink drinks after work, indulge in sappiness and cheeziness at your local Hallmark store, eat obscene amounts of chocolate, listen to the 80's love-song marathon(s) that will inevitably be playing on one or more local radio stations, indulge in the heart shaped frosted cookies that you know someone in your office will bring in, and to celebrate love, whether it is love of a significant other, love of your girlriends, or love of vodka.

I have never bought that Valentine's day is a couple's holiday, because I have always had a fabulous time celebrating whether I am in a relationship with a man, or a relationship with a bottle of wine. Each year my girlfriends and i (regardless of whether we have boyfriends or not) convene on or around February 14th, decked out in as much red and pink finery as one can possibly stand, and descend upon the hippest of Boston restaurants for alot of champagne, shrieking laughter, and sheer enjoyment of the fact that we are so much more fabulous than all the snooty couples canoodling over their calamari. And the night usually ends with an old-school sleepover at one of our houses, complete with margaritas and dramatic readings of our high school diaries.

And i have had some great V-day's as part of a couple, because I like all that sappy crap. I WILL get my boyfriend a huge glittering Hallmark card with the cursive, loopy writing all over it. I WILL buy my boyfriend something great that I know he has had his eye on and I WILL wrap it in obnoxious pink and red heart-spattered wrapping paper. And we WILL go out for dinner and possibly even canoodle over our calamari. Why? Because i think it's fun. I don't need a holiday to allow me to do these things, but I will take advantage of the fact that one exists.

I am proud to be a corn-ball. A fabulous corn-ball, but a corn-ball nonetheless.
