as many of you know, i applied months and months ago to be a volunteer at the DNC this july. i initially was really excited to be at a national convention, because i have done the state convention thing and it was little more than the political equivalent of a sporting event. lots of cheering, popcorn throwing, mardi gras beads and as usual i was backing a loser (damn you, robert reich!).
anywho, i got my security clearance a month or two ago, and was told i would be contacted with my assignment. i was thinking maybe i would be a hostess of sorts, greeting political powers that be, reccomending restaurants and amusements..maybe they would give me some cute uniform to wear, and i would have my own booth and scads of coupons and comps to give out..you know that kind of thing. it would all be very glamourous.
but no
i just spoke with kelly from the DNC committee and it turns out that i was given the esteemed position of "driver". she made it seem very elegant, of course..i would be "driving dignitaries to destinations of their choice". but i get the distinct impression that instead of driving ted kennedy to the capitol grill in his limo, i would be driving some awful van full of khaki-clad delegates from Kansas to Cheers". thanks, but no thanks.
and anyway, arent we going to the cape that week? you see, my political ambitions wane in the face of 1) heat, 2) large crowds and 3) the prosepct of driving a van.
sorry DNC!
