last night i went to Rock Bottom with Adam for "Rocktoberfest" (where the restaurant unveils their new fall brews and menu). it was divine as always. after dinner i made a quick stop into the ladies room and was not shocked to find that nearly every stall was unusable except one. i waited for the patron of the one, what i assumed was somewhat clean stall and when she left, i smiles and nodded at her amdmade my way in. only too late did I realize there was no toilet paper in the stall.

i hate when that happens.

and i immediately thought "that girl does NOT understand girl code".

girl code is something that Andy and i invented but i am sure everyone participates in some version of it. it means telling someone when they enter a bathroom stall, that there is no toilet paper left. it means when you see a girl with her tag out, or her fly down, you tell her. and not in an annoying loud way, but in a cool whisper "hey girl, check yourself". it means when you see a girl with fabulous shoes, be she a hostess at a restaurant, a co-worker, or just someone on the street, you say to them "oh my god i LOVE your shoes" because you know you would want someone to do that to you.

it also goes deeper than that. it means if a man wrongs your girlfriend, you hate that man, and if you see that man in public you hurl something at him, like a knockoff Louis Vuitton bag or an insult about his receding hairline.

it means that if your girlfriend needs a wingwoman, you put your hangups aside and you BE that wingwoman. and you be the best wingwoman you can be. which also may mean that if your girlfriend has her martini-goggles on, you be the best cock-block you can be (sorry, guys!)

i have seen girl code in action often, and each time it makes me proud. i have been in the ladies room in a Boston bar where a woman is crying because the guy she came with was grinding on the dance floor with some random bar-slut. and i have seen the women in that restroom, many of whom didn't even know her, rallly around her with cries of "that asshole!" and "it's ok, honey" and then witnessed one of those ladies go out onto the dance floor and pour her drink on the offender.

i have also been sent a drink at a bar by a woman simply because we had the same top on. instead of being ill about it, we bonded over our similar great taste.

i have seen my friends rally around a broken-hearted gal and damn her rouge of an ex boyfriend to hell and beyond. and i know that if i were in that position, my girlfriends would chase whoever hurt me out of town for good.

basically girl code means that no matter what, no matter where or why, you can count on your girlfriends, and girls in general, because we all suscribe to girl code. you have an army of ladies with fabulous shoes and matching handbags to watch your back. and you are never alone.

we are a secret society and the password is "fabulous". get in on it.

I am shocked, outraged even, that the woman didn't alert you to the fact that there was zero toilet paper left.

I've handed girls toilet paper underneath the stall and even went as far as giving someone kleneex as I was leaving a stall with no toilet paper.

I demand her club card be revoked.

for serious. You don't let someone walk in on a paper-less stall. Unheard of.

hey-
I love your blog..
I have to say I am totally with you on "Girl Code" but I did have a bad experience with it a while back. I was in a similar situation like you except I was the one who told another girl that there was no toilet paper left in the stall and she just came back with a super bitchy comment "Well what did you use!?"
It's those insecure, bad apples that ruin the bunch.

Ciao!

You are totally right. Girl code is very important. Too many of us are just competitive or snobby with each other when we really need to be backing each other up. Keep spreadin' the word!
