i have always wanted to live near the ocean.

growing up, i lived maybe a 15-20 minutes drive away from the beach, but i always wanted to live right across from the water. so that i could smell the refreshing, salty sea when i woke up in the morning.

well that, it turns out, is not quite as pleasant as i thought it would be.

having lived across from the ocean for a year now, i have made the following observations:

*the ocean does not smell good. especially low tide. especially when it is really warm out. usually at night, i can keep our apartment pretty cool and pleasant with the AC and fans. but if there is just one window open, then a scent i call "hot ocean" wafts in and takes over. this ain't no Yankee Candle "Ocean Water" scent. this is straight up warm, stagnant, disgusting salty nastiness. ick.

*being near the ocean means that sea gulls will regularly hang out in your parking lot, and crap everywhere, and be scary and dirty and fearless and hang out in your parking spot like they own it. i have learned not to mess with them, if they want my spot, they can have it. or else when i wake up the next morning i will not be able to see through my windsheild, if you know what i mean.

living so close to the beach does have it's good points. it's pretty, and it's nice to go for walks/bike rides next to it and it is usually cooler and more breezy than it is inland. but between "hot ocean" and gargantuan seagulls, the bloom is clearly off the rose.

hmm... you're right, all this talk of gulls and stagnant salty etc. is de-romanticizing the whole 'living by the ocean' for me. even if still heart it to death.

Of course, there's a difference between 'the ocean' and 'Wollaston Beach', yew. I had friends who lived on the beach side of Sea Street and their backyard was the ocean... and yuk. They used to fish out there and EAT THE FISH. Ooooh gross.
