I just got the email from my boyfriend that I have been waiting for for a long time.

Something I have wanted for so long, but that I thought would never be a reality for me because Adam worries too much.

" I think I may teach you how to drive standard in the upcoming weeks. Not for pleasure, but rather for necessity"

Aw yeah!!

I have been waiting for this opportunity forever. Or, at least for as long as we have been together. I have always wanted to learn but he has always put me off because of my questionable (in his estimation) driving skills. So what if I tend to tailgate? So what if an ambulance driver once told ME i should be a stunt driver? I can tone it down for the sake of learning a new trick. So I begged. Repeatedly.

And was always rebuffed.

And then to add insult to injury, my mom goes and buys herself a standard VW Bug and teaches HERSELF to drive it, but still won't teach me. So what if I have a habit of misjudging parking spaces and enjoy having vehicular liasons with cement poles? What if I want to go to Europe and rent a car? Come ON.

But now, my day has come.

Adam has no idea what he is getting himself into*.

*(of course this will be the one time he actually reads my blog. Hi boo! I was just kidding)

I learned how to drive a standard out of necessity myself, at age 23. I was in Iceland at the time, and my ex and I were planning on getting a cheap used car with a stick shift, so I figured I'd better learn.

I'm not the world's best driver by any means, but I picked it up rather quickly. Good luck! You'll do great!

my dad taught me to drive stick when i bought my first car (a standard). he was very yelly, and made me practice down by watson park and joans gym, that whole hilly neighborhood behind there? but i'm glad to know how, and i'm a better driver because he took the time to explain what was going on mechanically and why i had to do certain things... it was hard and frustrating, but once you get the hang of it, it is not as tricksy as it seems!! good luck and watch out for whiplash. :) ps driving a standard came in really handy in college for politely not letting anyone drive my car ("oh, i would let you take it, but it's a standard. SORRY.")

Brings a whole new meaning to "popping the question", right? (o;
I had an 11 year old Subaru (standard) in high school. Piece of crap. Learning to drive it was like being in a rodeo. But you actually FEEL like you're really driving, if that makes sence at all. I was a pro! When I got my automatic, I kept groping for the stick shift. A few years ago, my (now former) friend had me drive her stick shift, but was bitching the whole time that I was "grinding the gears". Whatever! Either she was a wench, or I've lost my standard driving skills. I think it's the former. Lol...

i don't drive standard. i could, i just don't. i usually tell people that if i needed to drive to the hospital i could do it, but that's about it. i don't get people who love it, i just think it;s more work. i'm all set. but good for you!

i dont plan on buying a standard car or driving it all the time..i just want to learn so when a-holes are like "stick is so awesome, you HAVE to learn". then i can be like "yeah i can drive stick, it's okay i guess". i consider it more of an In Your Face move.

Drove stick for years. Hated it. Still hate it. I'm glad I can, but I'll never buy another standard-drive car.

Stick is also good for snow/ice, since you can downshift instead of brake.

I've been reading for a while now, and I finally am compelled to comment, because I am in exactly the same position! :-) I live in Iceland now and it's all standard all the time here, so it's time to learn. The weather here sucks almost all the time in the winter so I am not excited about that part, but it'll be nice to be able to drive here finally!
